Introduction

China's first inland university named after 'City', focusing on applied talent cultivation for new urbanization and smart city development, known as one of the 'Top Eight Architecture Schools'.

Overview

Hunan City University (HNCU), located in Yiyang City, Hunan Province, is a full-time public undergraduate institution sponsored by the Hunan Provincial Government. It is the first university in inland China to be named after 'City', formed in 2002 through the merger of Yiyang Teachers College and Hunan Urban Construction College.

As a high-level applied characteristic college under Hunan's 'Double First-Class' initiative, HNCU is a pilot unit for the Ministry of Education's informatization construction and a national model for graduate employment.

Features & strengths

HNCU's flagship programs are in urban construction, including urban planning, cost engineering, construction management, and real estate management, which are highly regarded in Hunan and nationwide. Its predecessor, Hunan Urban Construction College, was designated by the National Education Commission in 1997 as one of China's 27 model higher engineering colleges, earning the nickname 'Top Eight Architecture Schools'.

In 2019, HNCU jumped 190 places in the Shanghai Ranking's Best Chinese Universities, from 521st to 331st, hailed as the most improved university. As a pilot unit for education informatization, it leads in smart campus and digital teaching.

Teaching & research

HNCU has 1,498 faculty members, over 40% with senior titles and more than 90% holding master's or doctoral degrees. Its 14 schools offer 50 undergraduate programs, including national and provincial first-class majors, and 12 master's degree programs in fields like urban planning, civil engineering, and management science.

The curriculum emphasizes practical, application-oriented learning with industry-based training bases. Research platforms include provincial key laboratories and engineering centers, such as the Smart City and Big Data Lab.

Campus & facilities

Located in central Yiyang, the campus is green and modern, with well-equipped teaching buildings, labs, a library, and sports facilities. The library holds over 2.86 million paper books and 2.28 million e-books, offering 24-hour study areas and digital resources.
