University Profile

Introduction

China's first normal school in Guangdong, with over 120 years of heritage, blending Chaoshan culture and global education.

Overview

Hanshan Normal University, located in Chaozhou City, Guangdong Province, is a provincial public undergraduate normal university with a history of over 120 years. Founded in 1903 as Huichaojia Normal School, it was the first teacher-training institution in China and the first in Guangdong.

In 2024, it was officially approved as a master's degree-granting institution. The university sits in the historic city of Chaozhou, along the Han River, merging millennia-old Chaoshan culture with modern education. It has four campuses (West, Central, South, East) covering about 1,500 mu (100 hectares) with over 500,000 square meters of buildings.

Features & strengths

Hanshan Normal University's core strength lies in its long-standing tradition of teacher education. As one of China's earliest normal schools, it is known as the 'Cradle of Teachers in Eastern Guangdong.' Flagship programs include Chinese Language and Literature, Mathematics and Applied Mathematics, English, and Chemistry, many of which are provincial first-class undergraduate programs.

The university is a leading center for Chaoshan studies (Teochew culture), co-establishing the Thai-Chinese Southeast Asian Chinese Overseas (Chaoshan) Research Institute with Mahidol University. It also excels in innovation and entrepreneurship education, being selected for the Data China 'Hundred Schools' project and collaborating with South China Normal University for joint graduate training.

Teaching & research

The university comprises 17 schools offering 62 undergraduate programs across literature, science, engineering, education, management, and more. It has three master's degree authorization points and joint training programs with domestic and international universities.

Over 40% of faculty hold senior titles, and the proportion with doctoral degrees is rising. The curriculum balances theory and practice, with normal programs emphasizing teaching skills and non-normal programs aligning with regional industries.

Campus & facilities

The campus is scenic, nestled between hills and the Han River. The West Campus features historic buildings, the Central Campus is the academic hub, the South Campus has modern labs, and the East Campus offers new dormitories and sports facilities.

With over 500,000 square meters of space, facilities include smart classrooms, a library, gymnasiums, and student activity centers. Dormitories are equipped with air conditioning and private bathrooms. Tree-lined paths and riverside walkways provide relaxation spots.
