University Profile

Introduction

The first applied technology university in Southwest China, integrating industry and education to cultivate high-level technical talents for regional economies.

Overview

West Yunnan University of Applied Sciences (WYUAS), headquartered in Dali City, Yunnan Province, is a full-time public undergraduate institution jointly established by China's Ministry of Education and the Yunnan Provincial Government.

As one of the first batch of applied technology universities in China, WYUAS adopts an open framework of 'main campus + specialized colleges + applied technology research institutes' (1+N+M). Its main campus is in Dali, with specialized colleges in Xishuangbanna (Dai Medicine), Pu'er (Tea), and Tengchong (Jewelry), closely tied to local industries.

Features & strengths

WYUAS's core strength lies in its unique applied technology focus and deep integration with local specialty industries. The university features distinctive colleges such as the Dai Medical College, Pu'er Tea College, and Jewelry College, directly aligned with Yunnan's competitive sectors like Dai traditional medicine, tea culture, and jewelry processing.

The Dai Medical College leverages Xishuangbanna's traditional medicine heritage and partners with local hospitals for hands-on training; the Pu'er Tea College specializes in tea science and industry management; the Jewelry College in Tengchong cultivates talents in jewelry design and appraisal.

Teaching & research

WYUAS boasts a diverse faculty of 752 full-time teachers and 520 part-time instructors, many with industry backgrounds, bringing practical expertise. The curriculum emphasizes a balance of theory and practice through project-based learning and school-enterprise cooperation.

The university has 10 direct colleges and several specialized colleges, offering 46 undergraduate majors, 18 top-up programs, and 24 associate degree programs across engineering, medicine, management, and arts. Research platforms include the Dai Medicine Research Institute, Pu'er Tea Research Institute, and an affiliated hospital with Xishuangbanna Dai Hospital, providing clinical internships.

Campus & facilities

WYUAS's campuses are spread across Dali, Pu'er, Xishuangbanna, and Tengchong, covering a total area of 1,738 mu (about 116 hectares) with 570,000 square meters of buildings. The main Dali campus occupies 876 mu, featuring a blend of Bai ethnic architecture and modern facilities.

The Pu'er Tea College campus is lush and tea-culture themed; the Dai Medical College in Jinghong offers tropical scenery; the Jewelry College in Tengchong is near the jade market for practical learning. Each campus has modern classrooms, labs, libraries, sports facilities, and student dormitories with internet and air conditioning.
