Founded in 1947 as the National Southwest Normal School, it became a full-time undergraduate university in 2009. The campus covers approximately 874.98 mu (about 58 hectares) with 261,300 square meters of buildings. The library holds 931,000 print books and 1.22 million e-books.

Features & strengths

Wenshan University's strengths lie in its close alignment with local industries and ethnic culture. Flagship programs include teacher education (preschool and primary education), traditional Chinese medicine (Chinese materia medica and cultivation), nursing, food inspection and testing, and non-ferrous metal intelligent metallurgy.

These programs directly serve the needs of Wenshan Prefecture and Yunnan Province, such as the cultivation and processing of Panax notoginseng (a valuable herb) and mineral development. As the first university in Yunnan co-built by a provincial department and a prefecture government, it enjoys strong partnerships with local enterprises, providing students with abundant internship opportunities.

Teaching & research

Wenshan University comprises 9 secondary colleges offering 47 undergraduate and 13 associate degree programs across education, medicine, engineering, science, and management. The faculty includes 653 staff, with 523 full-time teachers, many holding senior academic titles.

The curriculum emphasizes applied learning: for example, the Chinese medicine program uses local herbal resources for field studies, and the metallurgy program partners with mining companies for hands-on training. Research platforms include one postdoctoral research station and several provincial key labs, such as the Sanqi (Panax notoginseng) Resource Development Lab.

Campus & facilities

The campus features a pleasant environment with high greenery coverage, blending modern architecture with ethnic design elements. Facilities include multimedia classrooms, well-equipped labs, and training centers. The library offers extensive print and digital resources.
