Hunan University of Medicine

Hunan University of Medicine (HUM) is a national public full-time undergraduate medical institution located in Huaihua City, Hunan Province, directly under the Hunan Provincial Department of Education. It is selected for the Excellent Doctor Education and Training Program.

The university traces its origins to 1912 when the Changsha Red Cross Nursing Training Institute was founded by Yan Fuqing, a renowned medical educator who returned from studying in the United States. After a century of development, it was upgraded to a university in 2014.

HUM's core strengths lie in its long-standing medical education tradition and strong clinical practice network. It has two directly affiliated hospitals (HUM General Hospital and First Affiliated Hospital) and several non-directly affiliated hospitals, providing abundant clinical internship opportunities.

Flagship majors include Clinical Medicine, Nursing, Pharmacy, and Medical Laboratory Science, with Clinical Medicine recognized as a provincial first-class undergraduate program. The university emphasizes practical teaching and collaborates closely with medical institutions in Huaihua and surrounding areas, earning a good reputation among graduates in primary healthcare.

HUM comprises 16 secondary teaching units offering 20 undergraduate programs, including Clinical Medicine, Nursing, Pharmacy, Medical Imaging, and Rehabilitation Therapy. The faculty includes 4,642 staff and medical personnel (including affiliated hospitals), with a high proportion of senior professors, many of whom have overseas study or training experience.

The curriculum integrates theory and practice, employing case-based learning and simulation teaching. For research, the university has teaching and research equipment valued at approximately 200 million yuan, along with several provincial key laboratories and institutes, such as the Institute of Reproduction and Genetics.

HUM has two campuses, Jinxi and Jinhai, covering a total area of 945,300 square meters with a building area of 264,200 square meters. The campuses are beautifully landscaped with modern teaching facilities. The library holds 1,097,700 print books and 1,098,400 e-books, providing rich learning resources.

Student dormitories are well-equipped with air conditioning and hot water. The campuses also feature sports venues, canteens, and supermarkets to meet daily needs. The newer Jinhai Campus boasts smart classrooms and advanced experimental centers.
