About the university

Dali University (DLU), located in Dali City, Dali Bai Autonomous Prefecture, Yunnan Province, is a full-time regular undergraduate institution co-built by the province and the prefecture. It is one of the first pilot units of the Excellent Doctor Education and Training Program and one of the first pilot universities for the reform of the training model for professional master's degree in clinical medicine in China. The university traces its roots to Dali Medical College and Dali Normal College, both established in 1978. In October 2001, with approval from the Ministry of Education, Dali Medical College and Dali Normal College merged to form Dali College, and Dali Industrial School and Yunnan Radio and Television University Dali Branch were incorporated into the institution. In 2003, it was approved as a master's degree granting institution. In April 2015, the university was officially renamed Dali University. In 2021, it was approved as a doctoral degree granting institution. In 2025, it was designated as a pilot university for improving the quality of education for international students in China by the Ministry of Education. As of April 2025, the university has two campuses: Gucheng and Xiaguan, covering an area of 1,765,400 square meters, with a total building area of 566,200 square meters. It comprises 18 teaching colleges, 9 affiliated hospitals (including 2 directly affiliated hospitals), 1 affiliated kindergarten, and 65 undergraduate programs. It has 1 first-level doctoral degree authorization point, 9 first-level master's degree authorization points, and 18 categories of professional master's degrees. The university has 1,506 faculty and staff members, over 22,000 full-time students, and over 20,000 continuing education students. In December 1978, the Ministry of Education issued a notice approving the establishment of Dali Medical College, located on Renmin South Road in Dali City, based on the former Dali Health School. In 1978, the regular class of the college was renamed Xiaguan Normal College, under the leadership of the Provincial Education Department and the Prefecture Government, located on the former site of Dianxi University in the northern suburbs of Dali City, responsible for training qualified primary and secondary school teachers for Dali Prefecture and other prefectures in western Yunnan, as well as providing in-service teacher training for Dali Prefecture. In 1988, the school established the China TV Normal College Dali Normal College Branch, offering programs in Chinese, Mathematics, and English. In September 1992, with approval from the Provincial Education Commission and the Provincial Planning Commission, Dali Industrial School was officially established as a full-time secondary specialized school, led and managed by Dali Prefecture, with an enrollment capacity of 460 students, admitting junior high school graduates for a four-year program. In October 2001, the Ministry of Education approved the merger of Dali Medical College and Dali Normal College to form Dali College, dissolving the original two institutions; the Yunnan Provincial People's Government decided to incorporate Dali Industrial School and Yunnan Radio and Television University Dali Branch into the new institution.
