About the university

Dalian Polytechnic University (DPU), located in Dalian, Liaoning Province, is a full-time public regular institution of higher education established and managed by the People's Government of Liaoning Province. It is designated as a "Key University for High-Level Domestic Construction" in Liaoning Province, a model university for transformation, a training base for higher education institutions in Liaoning, a national innovation experimental zone for talent cultivation in ecological teaching systems of art design, a key undergraduate talent training base for shortage professions in Liaoning, and a talent training base for art design. The university is also part of the Excellence Engineer Education and Training Program, the Innovation Capability Enhancement Program for Higher Education Institutions, the Excellence Agricultural and Forestry Talent Education and Training Program, and a member of the CDIO Engineering Education Alliance. Founded in 1958, the university was originally named Shenyang Institute of Light Industry and located in Shenyang. In 1970, it moved to Kuandian County, Liaoning, and later that same year relocated to Dalian, changing its name to Dalian Institute of Light Industry. In December 1973, it was placed under the leadership of the First Light Industry Bureau of Liaoning Province. In August 1978, it came under the dual leadership of the Ministry of Light Industry and Liaoning Province, with the Ministry of Light Industry as the primary authority. In 1998, it was transferred to the management of Liaoning Province. In 2007, the university was renamed Dalian Polytechnic University. In 2016, it was approved as one of the second batch of pilot universities for transformation and development in Liaoning Province. In 2018, it received the title of "National Model University with Distinctive Experience in Deepening Innovation and Entrepreneurship Education Reform." In 2023, it was approved as a Liaoning Provincial Mass Innovation Space and a Liaoning Provincial Innovation and Entrepreneurship College Construction Unit. As of September 2025, the university comprises 17 colleges (departments) and offers 43 undergraduate programs. It has 2 postdoctoral research stations, 3 first-level doctoral degree authorization points, 4 self-established second-level doctoral degree authorization points, 14 first-level master's degree authorization points, and 9 professional master's degree categories. The campus covers an area of 522,000 square meters, with total teaching and research equipment valued at 593.819 million RMB. The Shenyang Municipal Government decided to establish Shenyang Institute of Light Industry, with preparations beginning on July 22, 1958, and the institute officially established on October 24, 1958. In December 1958, the Liaoning Provincial Party Committee decided to close the All-China Federation of Trade Unions Cadre School and merge it into Shenyang Institute of Light Industry. In February 1959, the All-China Federation of Trade Unions Shenyang Cadre School was merged into the institute. In spring 1959, the institute was placed under the jurisdiction of the Liaoning Provincial Light Industry Department. In October 1961, Yingkou Seawater Chemical Engineering College was merged into Shenyang Institute of Light Industry as Yingkou Branch. In August 1962, Liaoning Textile College was closed, and its students and some faculty were merged into Shenyang Institute of Light Industry. In December 1969, Liaoning Textile Industry Vocational School was dissolved, and some faculty and staff were merged into the institute. In 1970, Shenyang Institute of Light Industry moved to Kuandian County. At the end of 1970, it was placed under the leadership of the provincial and municipal revolutionary committees, primarily under Lüda (Dalian). In December of the same year, Dalian Light Industry School was merged into the institute, and it was renamed Dalian Institute of Light Industry. From December 1973, it was led by the First Light Industry Bureau of Liaoning Province. In August 1978, it came under the dual leadership of the Ministry of Light Industry and Liaoning Province, with the Ministry of Light Industry as the primary authority. In 1998, it was transferred from the Ministry of Light Industry to the management of Liaoning Province. On October 25, 1999, Liaoning Textile Industry School and its Sino-Japanese Fashion Art Branch were merged into Dalian Institute of Light Industry. On March 16, 2007, it was renamed Dalian Polytechnic University. In January 2017, Dalian Polytechnic University was selected as a "Key University for High-Level Domestic Construction" in Liaoning Province. On June 23, 2021, the university joined the China-Ukraine University Alliance. On November 26, 2024, the Modern Chemical Industry College of Dalian Polytechnic University was inaugurated. In May 2025, the "China-Belarus Joint College" of Dalian Polytechnic University was approved for establishment. As of June 2025, Dalian Polytechnic University has 17 colleges (departments) and 43 undergraduate programs (categories).
