About the university
Dalian University of Technology (DUT), abbreviated as "Dagong" in Chinese, is located in Dalian City, Liaoning Province. It is a national key university directly under the Ministry of Education of the People's Republic of China, jointly constructed by the Ministry of Education and the Liaoning Provincial People's Government, with participation from the Dalian Municipal People's Government and the Panjin Municipal People's Government. It is also a central government-administered university and a member of the national "211 Project" and "985 Project," as well as a Class A university in the World-Class University initiative. Founded in April 1949 as the Engineering College of Dalian University, it became independent as Dalian Institute of Technology in July 1950. In October 1960, it was designated as a national key university directly under the Ministry of Education. The Graduate School was established in April 1986, and the university was renamed Dalian University of Technology in March 1988. In 1996, it became a "211 Project" university, jointly supported by the Ministry of Education, Liaoning Province, and Dalian City. In 2001, it launched the "985 Project" with key support from the Ministry of Education, Liaoning Province, and Dalian City. In December 2003, it was designated as a central government-administered university. In December 2012, the Ministry of Education approved the establishment of the Panjin Campus. In September 2017, it was selected as a Class A university in the World-Class University initiative, and in February 2022, it was included in the second round of the national "Double First-Class" initiative. As of November 2025, the university operates across one university, two locations, and three campuses, covering a total area of 3.5681 million square meters with a building area of approximately 2.0759 million square meters. It comprises 36 schools, 1 faculty, 2 research institutes, 1 college, 2 specialized schools, 1 independent college, and 77 undergraduate programs. It offers 39 first-level master's degree programs, 31 first-level doctoral degree programs, 28 postdoctoral research stations, 7 professional doctoral degree categories, and 15 professional master's degree categories. The university has approximately 4,500 faculty and staff, including about 3,000 full-time teachers, and a total student population of over 50,000, with more than 25,900 undergraduates and over 24,900 postgraduates. In the autumn of 1948, to meet the needs of economic and cultural construction after national liberation, the Communist Party of China began to establish a new type of regular university—Dalian University. The Engineering College of Dalian University, a key component, was the predecessor of Dalian University of Technology. It was founded in April 1949. The following year, Dalian University was dissolved, and the college became independent as Dalian Institute of Technology. In 1951, a new campus site was selected in the western suburbs of Dalian, at Lingshui Tun, surrounded by mountains on three sides and facing the sea. In October 1960, it was designated as a national key university directly under the Ministry of Education. In June 1980, it became one of the first key universities to establish minority classes and implement targeted enrollment. In 1980, the university established China's first Sino-foreign joint training base for senior economic management talents (Dalian Training Center for Industrial Science and Technology Management). Subsequently, it pioneered MBA education in China, becoming a pioneer in business management education. In November 1981, it was approved by the State Council as one of the first batch of institutions authorized to confer doctoral and master's degrees. In April 1986, the Graduate School was established. In March 1988, the university was renamed Dalian University of Technology. In 1996, it launched the national "211 Project" with joint support from the Ministry of Education, Liaoning Province, and Dalian City. In 1999, it was selected as one of the first batch of National College Students' Cultural Quality Education Bases. In 2001, it launched the national "985 Project" with key support from the Ministry of Education, Liaoning Province, and Dalian City. In December 2003, it was designated as a central government-administered university. In 2004, it implemented the second phase of the "985 Project." In January 2006, it was selected for the national "111 Plan." In March 2007, it became one of the first pilot universities for graduate training mechanism reform. In September, it was among the first batch of universities to implement the National College Students' Innovative Experimental Program. In the same year, it became one of the first ten universities in the engineering education reform practice project jointly implemented by the Ministry of Education and the Chinese Academy of Engineering.
