About the university
Tianjin University of Science and Technology (abbreviated as TUST), located in Tianjin, is a university jointly established by the central and local governments and a key university of Tianjin. It is a multidisciplinary university with engineering as its core, and coordinated development of disciplines including engineering, science, humanities, agriculture, medicine, economics, management, law, arts, and education. The university was founded in 1958 as Hebei Institute of Light Industry, one of the first four undergraduate institutions of light industry in China, and was formerly under the Ministry of Light Industry. After its establishment, it successively incorporated the pulp and papermaking program (including its main faculty and laboratory equipment from Tianjin University), the plastic molding and processing program from the former Wuxi Institute of Light Industry, the fermentation engineering and salt chemical engineering programs from the former Beijing Institute of Light Industry, and the former Tanggu Salt Industry College of the Ministry of Light Industry, which was renowned as the "Whampoa of Salt Industry". The salt industry higher education originated from a cadre training class for salt administration under the Ministry of Light Industry, which evolved into the Tanggu Salt Affairs School and later into various salt industry colleges, eventually merging into Tianjin Institute of Light Industry as the Salt Chemical Engineering Department (later Salt Engineering Department). In 1968, the university was renamed Tianjin Institute of Light Industry. In 1998, its administrative system shifted to a joint central-local model with Tianjin as the primary manager. In 2002, it was renamed Tianjin University of Science and Technology. As of November 2025, the university has two campuses, Binhai and Hexi, covering a total area of 1,252,700 square meters. It comprises 17 colleges (teaching departments), offers 56 undergraduate programs, 21 first-level master's degree disciplines, 13 professional master's degree programs, 5 first-level doctoral degree disciplines, and 1 professional doctoral degree program. It has a national key discipline in Fermentation Engineering. Six disciplines—Agricultural Sciences, Chemistry, Biology & Biochemistry, Engineering, Materials Science, and Environment/Ecology—are among the top 1% in the ESI global rankings, with Agricultural Sciences in the top 1‰. Food Science and Engineering ranks 32nd in the world according to the ARWU (Shanghai Ranking), and Polymer Science ranks 9th globally in the U.S. News rankings. The university has 2,190 faculty and staff, including 1 academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, and over 28,000 full-time students at the undergraduate, master's, and doctoral levels.
