About the university

Yangzhou University (abbreviated as YZU), located in Yangzhou City, Jiangsu Province, is a comprehensive university jointly established by the Jiangsu Provincial People's Government and the Ministry of Education of the People's Republic of China, as well as jointly established by the Jiangsu Provincial People's Government and the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs of the People's Republic of China. It is a key provincial comprehensive university in Jiangsu, a Class A university under the Jiangsu High-Level University Construction Peak Plan, and one of the first batch of demonstration universities for deepening innovation and entrepreneurship education reform. The university traces its origins to Tongzhou Normal School and Tonghai Agricultural School, founded by Mr. Zhang Jian in 1902. During the nationwide institutional restructuring in 1952, its agricultural programs and the commissioned humanities and history specializations moved westward to Yangzhou, forming Subei Agricultural College and Subei Normal College, while four other institutions were established or relocated to Yangzhou around the same time. In 1992, Yangzhou University was formed through the merger of six institutions: Yangzhou Normal College, Jiangsu Agricultural College, Yangzhou Institute of Technology, Yangzhou Medical College, Jiangsu Water Conservancy Engineering College, and Jiangsu Commercial College. In September 2015, it became a university jointly built by the Jiangsu Provincial People's Government and the Ministry of Education; in August 2023, it became a university jointly built by the Jiangsu Provincial People's Government and the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs; and in September 2021, it was designated as a university under the Jiangsu High-Level University Construction Peak Plan. As of February 2026, the university covers an area of over 6,100 mu, with a building area of 1,435,900 square meters. Its total fixed assets amount to 6.346 billion yuan, with teaching and research equipment valued at 1.557 billion yuan, and a library collection of 4.06 million volumes. The university offers 19 first-level doctoral degree programs, 5 professional doctoral degree categories, 51 first-level master's degree programs, 38 professional master's degree categories, and 21 postdoctoral research stations. It has over 6,000 faculty and staff members, more than 34,300 full-time undergraduate students, and over 16,400 doctoral and master's students. According to the university's official website in March 2026, it has 31 teaching units. As of June 2025, the university offers 103 undergraduate programs. In June 1902, Zhang Jian founded Tongzhou Minli Normal School (Tongzhou Normal School), which is the origin of Yangzhou University. In the same year, Tonghai Agricultural School was established. In May 1912, Tongzhou Normal School was renamed 'Private Nantong Normal School,' and in November of the same year, it became 'Jiangsu Provincial Substitute Normal School.' In 1913, Zhang Jian wrote the school motto 'Diligence, Hard Work, Frugality, and Simplicity' for the agricultural school. In May 1952, Subei Normal College was established by merging the Humanities and History Specialization of Private Tongzhou Normal School, the Mathematics and Physics Specialization of Yangzhou Middle School, the Art Specialization of Southern Jiangsu Danyang Art School, and the Education Specialization of Subei Teacher Training School. In April 1959, Yangzhou Normal College was merged into Subei Normal College, which was upgraded to an undergraduate institution and renamed Yangzhou Normal College.
