About the university

Guilin University of Electronic Technology (GUET), located in the world-renowned scenic city and historical cultural city of Guilin, is a university jointly established by the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, the State Administration of Science, Technology and Industry for National Defense, and the People's Government of Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region. It is also a selected institution of the National "Basic Capacity Building Project for Universities in Central and Western China." GUET is recognized as a member of the Excellent Engineer Education and Training Program, one of the first batch of Higher Education Institutions for Scientific and Technological Achievement Transformation and Technology Transfer, a National Demonstration University for Deepening Innovation and Entrepreneurship Education Reform, and a designated institution for preparatory education for children of border defense soldiers. It is the only university in Guangxi with a long-term commitment to national defense scientific research and is one of the 30 universities authorized by the General Armament Department for pre-research projects on communication equipment, as well as one of the universities authorized by the BeiDou ICD. The university was founded in 1960, approved by the State Council in 1980 as Guilin Institute of Electronic Technology, and renamed Guilin University of Electronic Technology in 2006. It has successively been under the administration of the Fourth Ministry of Machine Building, the Ministry of Electronics Industry, the Ministry of Machinery and Electronics Industry, the China Electronics Industry Corporation, and the Ministry of Information Industry. In 2000, its management system shifted to a joint central-local model with local government as the primary administrator. In 1990, then General Secretary of the Communist Party of China, Jiang Zemin, visited the university and inscribed the motto: "Cultivate more qualified talents for the development of the electronics industry." The university has been consecutively awarded the honorary title of "National Civilized Campus." As of January 2026, the university comprises the Jinjiling Campus, Liuhe Road Campus, Huajiang Campus, and Beihai Campus, covering a total area of over 4,700 mu. It has 18 colleges (departments), 76 undergraduate programs, 8 first-level doctoral degree authorization points, 1 professional doctoral degree authorization category, 4 postdoctoral research stations, 21 first-level master's degree authorization points, and 12 professional master's degree authorization categories. The university has over 3,400 faculty and staff members and more than 41,000 full-time students. In February 1960, the First Ministry of Machine Building approved the establishment of Guilin Mechanical College in Guilin. In April, Guilin Mechanical College and Guilin Technical School merged to form Guilin Mechanical College, which included a secondary school division and a technical division. In November, Guilin Mechanical College was placed under the leadership of the Third Ministry of Machine Building. In June 1961, following the downsizing directives from the Education Bureau of the Third Ministry of Machine Building, the technical division was abolished. In April 1962, the Third Ministry of Machine Building decided to stop enrolling students in specialized colleges, and the institution was renamed Guilin Mechanical Industry School. In 1964, the school was transferred to the Fourth Ministry of Machine Building. From 1966 to 1971, the school was forced to suspend enrollment. In the spring of 1972, the school resumed operations and was renamed Guilin Radio School. In 1977, the school participated in the unified national enrollment for universities and secondary specialized schools. On May 20, 1980, with the approval of the State Council of the People's Republic of China, Guilin Institute of Electronic Technology was established on the basis of Guilin Radio School, under the dual leadership of the Fourth Ministry of Machine Building and the Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, with the Fourth Ministry as the primary authority. In January 1981, the Fourth Ministry designated the institute as a prefecture-level (division-level) political entity. In August, the institute and Factory 611 established separate Party committees. On August 30, the separation of the institute and the factory was confirmed. In December 1982, the affiliated factory, the Electronic Instrument Factory, was established. In March 1983, the institute was directly managed by the Ministry of Electronics Industry. In July 1984, the former Lijiang Children's School was officially transferred to the institute and, with the approval of the Guilin Education Bureau, was named "Affiliated Middle School of Guilin Institute of Electronic Technology." On July 16, the Ministry of Education approved the institute as one of the third batch of higher education institutions authorized to confer bachelor's degrees. In December 1985, the institute began jointly training master's students with Xidian University.
