About the university
Wuyi University is located in Wuyishan, a World Cultural and Natural Heritage site, one of China's first national parks, and a National Civilized City. It is a provincial public full-time undergraduate university authorized to confer master's degrees. The university is recognized as a National Industry-Education Integration Development Project University, a National Demonstration University for Deepening Innovation and Entrepreneurship Education Reform, a National Innovation and Entrepreneurship Education Practice Base, a National Entrepreneurship Incubation Demonstration Base, a National University Practice Education Innovation and Entrepreneurship Base, one of the first universities to implement the National College Student Innovation and Entrepreneurship Training Program, a Fujian Province First-Class Applied University, a Fujian Province Demonstration Applied Undergraduate University, a Fujian Province Innovation, Entrepreneurship, and Creativity Education Demonstration University, a Fujian Province Industry-Creation Integration Education Practice Demonstration Base, and a Fujian Province 'Three Comprehensive Education' Comprehensive Reform Pilot University. It is also qualified to recruit students from Hong Kong, Macao, and Taiwan. Approved by the Ministry of Education in 2007 as a public full-time undergraduate university, Wuyi University traces its origins to Nanping Normal College, founded in 1958. In 1962, Fuzhou Normal College merged into it to form Nanping Normal University. In 1963, the university moved to Zhangzhou and merged into Fujian Second Normal University. It was suspended during the Cultural Revolution and reestablished in 1978 with State Council approval. As of May 2025, the university covers an area of 3,000 mu (approximately 200 hectares), with a building area of 419,300 square meters and total equipment value of 398 million yuan. It comprises 13 teaching schools/departments, offers 42 undergraduate majors, and has 3 master's professional degree authorization points. The university has about 15,000 full-time students and over 1,100 faculty and staff. On August 12, 1958, Nanping Prefecture Normal College was established based on Nanping Normal School. In autumn of that year, it enrolled 85 primary school teachers selected from various counties in Nanping Prefecture, offering two majors—Chinese and Mathematics—with a one-year program, after which graduates became junior high school teachers. In autumn 1959, it began unified enrollment through the national college entrance examination with a two-year program, offering Chinese and Mathematics in three classes, enrolling 150 new students. In the first half of that year, construction began on a campus at Guanshatian in the west of the city, and the university officially moved there in 1960. That autumn, it added Physics, Chemistry, and Russian, totaling five majors in seven classes with 320 students, while also enrolling 60 students in a one-year short-term training program to address the shortage of junior high school teachers in northern Fujian. After the Third Plenary Session of the 11th Central Committee of the Communist Party of China, the State Council approved the reestablishment of Nanping Normal College, renamed Jianyang Normal College. In autumn 1979, the college-level classes of Jianyang Normal School (located in Jianyang) merged into it. In March 1990, the State Education Commission decided to merge Nanping Vocational University, which had been established under the college in 1985, into the college to form a Vocational Education Department. In 1993, with state approval, the college also launched part-time adult education and established a number of specialized correspondence stations in collaboration with several universities and colleges within and outside the province.
