About the university
Shanghai University of Sport (SUS), abbreviated as "Shangti", is located in Shanghai. It is a public sports university jointly managed by the General Administration of Sport of China and the Shanghai Municipal People's Government, and is a national "Double First-Class" construction university. The university is a pilot unit for the construction of high-level local universities in Shanghai, and is eligible for the Chinese Government Scholarship program. It is designated by the Ministry of Education as a pilot institution for independently enrolling international students under the Chinese Government Scholarship, a national high-level sports talent reserve base, and a participant in the Shanghai First-Class Undergraduate Education Leading Plan, the Shanghai First-Class Graduate Education Leading Plan, and the Shanghai Excellent Journalism and Communication Talent Education and Training Base. Founded in November 1952 as East China Institute of Physical Education, it was formed by merging the physical education departments of Nanjing University, Ginling College, and East China Normal University. It was renamed Shanghai Institute of Physical Education in 1956. In June 2001, it became a full-time regular institution of higher education jointly managed by the General Administration of Sport and the Shanghai Municipal People's Government, with the Shanghai government as the main sponsor. In June 2023, the Ministry of Education approved the renaming of Shanghai Institute of Physical Education to Shanghai University of Sport. As of December 2025, SUS has three campuses (Yangpu, Xuhui, Songjiang) and two teaching sites (Jiangwan, Huangpu), covering an area of over 1,100 mu (approximately 73.3 hectares), with a building area of about 430,000 square meters. It has 10 secondary colleges, offering 26 undergraduate programs across seven disciplines: education, science, engineering, medicine, management, art, and literature. The university has two first-level doctoral degree authorization points in sports science and psychology, as well as one of the first doctoral professional degree authorization points in sports in China. It also has five first-level master's degree authorization points and seven master's professional degree authorization points. There are over 630 full-time faculty members. The total number of full-time students is 8,420, including over 5,200 undergraduates, over 2,800 master's students, and over 400 doctoral students. On September 3, 1952, Cao Weifeng, then Director of the Higher Education Division of the East China Ministry of Education, convened a meeting with the heads of the physical education departments of East China Normal University, Nanjing University, and Ginling College, orally proposing the establishment of East China Institute of Physical Education based on these three departments, with the campus located at 1575 Fanhuangdu Road (now Wanhangdu Road), the former site of St. John's University. On November 8, East China Institute of Physical Education was officially established, and on December 8, the opening ceremony and founding meeting were held, with Shu Tong, then Director of the Propaganda Department of the East China Bureau of the Communist Party of China, inscribing the school name. From May 1 to 3, 1955, the second part of the institute moved back to the main campus. In mid-August, the institute began enrolling four-year undergraduate students and decided to abolish the second part. In February 1956, with the approval of the State Council, East China Institute of Physical Education was renamed Shanghai Institute of Physical Education. In June, the institute moved to its new location at 650 Qingyuan Ring Road. On July 21, 1958, the State Sports Commission telegraphed that the Central Committee had approved the transfer of Shanghai Institute of Physical Education to the leadership of Shanghai, with the handover to be completed by the end of July, as decided by the municipal party committee and government. On February 15, 1960, according to Document No. 9 of the State Council, Shanghai Institute of Physical Education was placed under the direct leadership of the State Sports Commission.
