About the university
Jiangsu Normal University (JSNU), located in Xuzhou City, Jiangsu Province, is a full-time public undergraduate institution approved by the Ministry of Education of the People's Republic of China, established by the Jiangsu Provincial People's Government, and under the administration of Jiangsu Province. It is a co-built university by the Jiangsu Provincial People's Government and the Ministry of Education, a member of the Jiangsu High-Level University Construction Project, and has been recognized as a "National Language Promotion Base." The predecessor of Jiangsu Normal University was the Su'nan Military Region Demobilized Cadre Cultural Accelerated School, founded in Wuxi, Jiangsu in 1952. In 1957, Jiangsu Normal College was established. In 1959, the college merged with Xuzhou Normal College (Pizhou) to form Xuzhou Teachers College, which began enrolling undergraduate students. In 1979, the college started enrolling master's students, and in 1981, it was approved by the State Council as one of the first batch of institutions authorized to confer master's degrees. In 1989, Xuzhou Normal College (Xuzhou) was merged in. In 1996, the institution was renamed Xuzhou Normal University. In 1999, Xuzhou Industrial School was merged in. In 2011, the university was renamed Jiangsu Normal University. In 2013, it began enrolling doctoral students, and in May of the same year, it was designated as one of the first batch of training bases for social work professionals by the Ministry of Civil Affairs. In 2024, the university was approved as a doctoral degree-granting institution. As of September 2025, Jiangsu Normal University has four campuses: Quanshan, Yunlong, Kuiyuan, and Jiawang, covering a total area of 1,864,100 square meters, with a total building area of 1,016,300 square meters. It has 22 professional colleges, offering 65 undergraduate programs, 2 first-level doctoral degree authorization points, 31 first-level master's degree authorization points, 20 professional master's degree categories, and 1 postdoctoral research station. The university has 1,861 full-time teachers, over 24,300 full-time undergraduate students, more than 7,500 doctoral and master's students, and over 650 international students pursuing academic degrees. In the early days after the founding of the People's Republic of China, to build a new China, a large number of cadres were transferred to local areas. The Central Military Commission decided to establish cultural schools for demobilized cadres in some provinces and cities nationwide to improve their cultural literacy. In August 1952, the Su'nan Military Region established the Su'nan Military Region Demobilized Cadre Accelerated Middle School in Wuxi, with Lieutenant General Liu Xiansheng as its first principal. In November 1952, the Su'nan Military Region Demobilized Cadre Accelerated Middle School and the Subei Military Region Professional Cadre Training Brigade were merged to form the Jiangsu Demobilized Cadre Cultural Accelerated School. In January 1953, the Jiangsu Provincial Demobilized Cadre Accelerated Middle School was established, with Zhu Yamin as principal. On June 28, 1956, the Jiangsu Provincial People's Committee decided to prepare for the establishment of Wuxi Normal College. On August 24, the Jiangsu Provincial Department of Education decided that before the official name of Wuxi Normal College was approved by the State Council, the school would be temporarily named the Jiangsu Wuxi Middle School Teacher Training Class, with Wu Xinshi as the class director and party secretary, and Liu Baichuan and Liu Boqian as deputy directors. The training class offered three majors. In August 1957, with the approval of the Ministry of Education, Jiangsu Normal College was established in Wuxi. In December 1957, the Jiangsu Provincial People's Committee decided, with the approval of the Ministry of Education, that Jiangsu Normal College would move from Wuxi to Xuzhou in 1958. On April 16, 1959, Xuzhou Normal College (Pizhou) moved from Yunhe Town, Pi County to Xuzhou and merged with Jiangsu Normal College, renamed Xuzhou Teachers College. That summer, it began enrolling four-year undergraduate students in Chinese Language and Literature and Mathematics. In the spring of 1962, at a State Council meeting discussing the adjustment plan for higher education institutions, Premier Zhou Enlai clearly stated that the vast Xuzhou region needed a university. As a result, Xuzhou Teachers College was retained and developed during the national adjustment of distribution of universities. During the Cultural Revolution, Xuzhou Teachers College suffered greatly, with normal teaching and research order disrupted, and enrollment systems, teaching plans, and management severely interfered. Enrollment was suspended in 1966, and from 1972 to 1976, the college enrolled five cohorts of regular class students. During this period, to meet national needs, a transistor factory was established in October 1970.
