About the university
Hebei University of Technology (HEBUT), also known as Hebei Gongda, is located in Tianjin, China. It is jointly established by the Hebei Provincial Government, Tianjin Municipal Government, and the Ministry of Education, and is supervised by the Hebei Education Department. In 2017, it was selected for the national 'Double First-Class' initiative. The university is a first-tier institution under Hebei Province's 'National First-Class University Construction' program, a key university under the '211 Project', a national pilot university for new engineering research and practice, a recipient institution for Chinese Government Scholarship international students, a member of the CDIO Engineering Education Alliance, and a participant in the National High-Level University Public Graduate Program. Its predecessor, Beiyang Craft School, was founded in 1903 and established the earliest university-run factory in China. It was renamed Hebei Provincial Industrial College in 1929. On December 11, 1993, the Academic Degrees Committee of the State Council approved the university as a doctoral degree-granting institution, with electrical engineering as its first doctoral program. In 1995, it was renamed Hebei University of Technology. The university is also part of the Midwest University Basic Capacity Building Project, the Tianjin High-Level Characteristic University Construction Project, the second batch of the Excellent Engineer Education and Training Plan, and the first batch of university science and technology achievement transformation and technology transfer bases. As of August 2024, Hebei University of Technology has three campuses: Beichen and Hongqiao in Tianjin, and Langfang in Hebei Province, covering over 4,000 mu (about 267 hectares) with a building area of over 870,000 square meters. As of October 2025, the university comprises 21 teaching units, offering 61 undergraduate programs. It has 10 postdoctoral research stations, 11 first-level doctoral degree authorization points, 1 professional doctoral degree category, 27 first-level master's degree authorization points, and 19 professional master's degree categories. The university has over 24,000 full-time undergraduates, over 11,000 postgraduates, and more than 2,700 faculty and staff, including over 1,800 full-time teachers. Historically, in 1902, Viceroy Yuan Shikai accepted the proposal of Zhou Xuexi, a candidate official of Zhili, to establish the Zhili Craft Bureau and an attached craft school, and appointed Ling Fupeng, the prefect of Tianjin, to prepare for its construction. On March 19, 1903, Beiyang Craft School held its opening ceremony at the former Examination Hall in the southeastern corner of Tianjin. In September 1904, following the 'Imperial School Regulations' issued in January 1904, it was renamed Zhili Higher Industrial School, and the weaving factory within the Zhili Craft Bureau became its affiliated internship workshop. In August 1909, a two-year middle school program was attached. In September 1912, it was renamed Zhili Higher Industrial School by order of the Ministry of Education of the Republic of China. In March 1913, with approval from the Ministry of Education, it was renamed Zhili Public Industrial Specialized School. In August 1914, Zhili Dyeing and Weaving School was dissolved and merged into the specialized school, adding dyeing and weaving departments. In September 1928, Zhili Province was renamed Hebei Province, and the school was renamed Hebei Provincial Industrial Specialized School; in November of the same year, the Hebei provincial government ordered the establishment of Hebei Provincial First Vocational School from the dyeing and weaving departments, which became independent. In May 1929, Hebei Provincial Industrial Specialized School was renamed Hebei Provincial Industrial College, and Hebei Provincial First Vocational School became its affiliated school. In May 1930, the affiliated school was renamed the Affiliated Senior Vocational Department of the Industrial College. In April 1937, an affiliated industrial vocational supplementary class was established; on July 28 of the same year, the school was bombed by Japanese aircraft, partially destroying the campus. In December 1946, Hebei Provincial Industrial College was renamed Hebei Provincial Institute of Technology. In January 1949, the People's Liberation Army took over the institute, and it resumed classes in February of the same year. On September 8, 1950, Hebei Provincial Institute of Technology was renamed Hebei Institute of Technology, and its affiliated school was renamed Hebei Institute of Technology Affiliated Engineering School. On June 20, 1951, the Central People's Government Ministry of Education decided to merge Beiyang University and Hebei Institute of Technology to form a new university, officially established on August 1, 1951, under the proposed name 'Tianjin University'; Hebei Institute of Technology was temporarily managed by the newly formed Tianjin University. In early 1952, the affiliated engineering school became independent.
