About the university
Zhejiang Sci-Tech University, located in Hangzhou, Zhejiang Province, is sponsored by the People's Government of Zhejiang Province. It is a key construction university in Zhejiang Province, with engineering as its core and coordinated development of multiple disciplines including science, engineering, humanities, economics, management, law, art, and education. It is a member of the Yangtze River Delta High-Level Industry-Specific University Alliance, a national model university for innovation and entrepreneurship, and a national model university for graduate employment. The predecessor of Zhejiang Sci-Tech University can be traced back to the Sericulture School founded in 1897 by Lin Qi, the prefect of Hangzhou, making it one of the earliest new-style educational institutions in China. In 1908, it was approved by the Qing government to be upgraded to the Higher Sericulture School. From the Xinhai Revolution to the eve of liberation, due to turbulent times, the school underwent several name changes and relocations but persisted in running. In 1959, the university began enrolling undergraduate students. In 1964, it was officially named Zhejiang Silk Engineering College by the State Council. In 1979, it started enrolling master's students, and in 1983, it obtained the authority to confer master's degrees. In 1999, with approval from the Ministry of Education, it was renamed Zhejiang Institute of Engineering. In 2004, with approval from the Ministry of Education, it was renamed Zhejiang Sci-Tech University. In 2006, it obtained the authority to confer doctoral degrees. In 2017, the university was selected as a key construction university in Zhejiang Province. As of December 2025, the university has four campuses: Xiasha, Wenyi, Linping, and Shangyu, along with the Zhejiang Modern Textile Technology Innovation Center, covering a total area of over 2,000 mu (of which the Linping campus covers approximately 517.114 mu). It comprises 21 colleges (teaching and research departments) and runs one independent college. Currently, it offers 56 undergraduate programs. It has 4 postdoctoral research stations, 6 first-level doctoral degree authorization points, 2 professional doctoral degree authorization points, 24 first-level master's degree authorization points, and 20 professional master's degree authorization points. It has 1 provincial summit discipline, 1 provincial advantageous characteristic discipline, and 8 provincial first-class disciplines. The university has 2,740 faculty and staff members and 39,849 full-time students (including those from the independent college), of which 9,843 are graduate students. In July 1897 (lunar calendar), Lin Qi, the prefect of Hangzhou, founded the Sericulture School at the former residence of Prince Yixian and the Guandi Temple (now within Quyuan Fenghe Park) by the West Lake, marking the beginning of modern textile and silk education in China. With the mission of serving China's sericulture industry and adopting advanced scientific teaching methods, the school cultivated a large number of sericulture technical talents, earning social recognition and government commendation, and was hailed as 'the pioneer of sericulture improvement nationwide.' In June 1908 (lunar calendar), Zeng Yun, the governor of Zhejiang, reported to the Qing government on the remarkable achievements of the Sericulture School and requested that it be renamed Zhejiang Intermediate Sericulture School. In August of the same year, Wu Shijian, a reader of the Hanlin Academy, petitioned the Qing government to upgrade the school to Zhejiang Higher Sericulture School, which was approved, and Governor Zeng Yun was instructed to make proper arrangements. After 1928, the school was successively renamed Zhejiang Provincial Senior Sericulture Middle School, Zhejiang Provincial Senior Sericulture Vocational School, and Zhejiang Provincial Senior Silk Vocational School. In January 1952, in accordance with the central government's directive on 'rectifying and developing secondary technical education and implementing specialized schooling,' the main campus (in Gudang, Hangzhou) was merged into the National Huzhou Senior Silk Vocational School to form Zhejiang Provincial Sericulture Technical School, while the branch campus (in Kanshan, Xiaoshan) became Zhejiang Provincial Silk Reeling Technical School. In September 1952, Zhejiang Provincial Silk Reeling Technical School merged with the textile department of Zhejiang Industrial Cadre School and was renamed Zhejiang Hangzhou Textile Industry School, offering two majors: silk reeling and textile.
