About the university

Zhejiang University of Science and Technology (ZUST) is a full-time undergraduate institution of applied sciences under the Zhejiang Provincial Government. It is among the first batch of universities selected for the Ministry of Education's 'Excellent Engineer Education and Training Program' and the 'Emerging Engineering Education Research and Practice Project', and is designated as a 'Characteristic International University of Zhejiang Province'. The university traces its roots to Hangzhou Industrial College Affiliated with Zhejiang University, founded in 1980 by Zhejiang University and Hangzhou Municipal Government. It was successively renamed Hangzhou Industrial College, Hangzhou Higher Technical College Affiliated with Zhejiang University, Hangzhou Higher Technical College, and Hangzhou Institute of Applied Engineering and Technology. In 2001, it became Zhejiang University of Science and Technology. In 2022, it was approved as a doctoral degree-granting project unit in Zhejiang Province, and in 2023, it was officially renamed Zhejiang University of Science and Technology. As of December 2025, ZUST has two campuses—Xiaoheshan in Hangzhou and Anji in Huzhou—covering an area of over 2,900 mu. It comprises 18 colleges and 1 teaching department, offering 49 undergraduate programs, 6 first-level academic master's degree disciplines, and 12 professional master's degree authorization points. The university has over 22,000 full-time undergraduate and graduate students, nearly 1,600 international students, and over 1,800 faculty and staff, including more than 1,440 full-time teachers, of whom nearly 570 hold senior professional titles and 63% hold doctoral degrees. In 1980, Hangzhou Industrial College Affiliated with Zhejiang University was established, enrolling its first batch of junior college students. In 1983, it was approved by the then State Education Commission to participate in one of the 17 World Bank loan projects for TV universities/short-cycle colleges, and the name 'Affiliated with Zhejiang University' was dropped, renaming it Hangzhou Industrial College. In 1984, the Ministry of Education and Zhejiang Provincial Government designated the university as a cooperation partner with Lower Saxony, Federal Republic of Germany, and it was renamed Hangzhou Higher Technical College Affiliated with Zhejiang University. In March 1985, the Zhejiang Provincial Government and the government of Lower Saxony signed an agreement for a provincial-state cooperative education program. To learn from German experience, the university was renamed 'Higher Technical College Affiliated with Zhejiang University' with provincial approval. In October 1987, the university was listed as a Sino-German intergovernmental cooperation project unit, and its leadership system was changed to joint leadership by the then State Education Commission and Zhejiang Provincial Government, with management by the provincial government. The name 'Affiliated with Zhejiang University' was removed, and it was officially named 'Hangzhou Higher Technical College', marking its establishment as an independent educational entity.
