About the university
Wenzhou University (WZU) is located in Wenzhou City, Zhejiang Province. It is sponsored by the Wenzhou Municipal People's Government, co-built by the Zhejiang Provincial Department of Education and the Wenzhou Municipal People's Government, the only comprehensive university in southern Zhejiang, northern Fujian, and eastern Jiangxi, a key construction university of Zhejiang Province, and a degree-awarding institution authorized to confer doctoral degrees. The origin of Wenzhou University can be traced back to Wenzhou Normal School founded in 1933. In 1933, Mr. Huang Suchu donated the school buildings of Zheng Lou Primary School to the Provincial Department of Education to establish the provincial Wenzhou Normal School. In 1958, the Wenzhou Municipal Party Committee decided to upgrade Wenzhou Junior Normal College to Wenzhou Normal College. In the same year, Wenzhou Normal School was placed under the leadership of the Party Committee of Wenzhou Normal College and was separated the following year. In 1984, the original Wenzhou University was founded. In 1992, Wenzhou Education College jointly operated with Wenzhou Normal College and was effectively merged into it. In January 2001, Ruian Normal School, Pingyang Normal School, and Wenzhou Preschool Normal School were merged into Wenzhou Normal College. In May 2004, the Ministry of Education approved the merger of the two institutions to prepare for the establishment of Wenzhou University. In February 2006, the Ministry of Education approved the formal establishment of the new Wenzhou University. In 2011, the university was selected into the National Excellent Engineer Education and Training Program. In 2017, it was selected as one of the first batch of national demonstration universities for deepening innovation and entrepreneurship education reform. In 2019, it became a provincial key construction university co-built by the province and the city. As of March 2025, the university has two campuses: Chashan and Xueyuan Road, with a property area of 1,973.43 mu, a building area of 1.056 million square meters, teaching and research equipment valued at 1.079 billion yuan, a collection of 2.9772 million paper books and 1.9072 million electronic books. It has 20 professional colleges, offering 55 undergraduate programs. It has 2 first-level doctoral degree authorization points, 1 professional doctoral degree authorization point, 19 first-level master's degree authorization points, and 21 professional master's degree authorization points. The university has 2,420 faculty and staff, including 1,518 full-time teachers, and over 25,000 full-time students. Wenzhou University was formed in 2004 through the merger of Wenzhou Normal College and the original Wenzhou University, following a path of 'two colleges merging, seven institutions integrating.' In 1933, Mr. Suchu donated all the property of the private Zheng Lou Primary School (valued at approximately 31,900 silver dollars) to the province, and the Zhejiang Provincial Department of Education established Wenzhou Normal School on this basis. On July 25, the 599th meeting of the Zhejiang Provincial Government decided to appoint Wang Xuesu as the principal of the provincial Wenzhou Normal School. On September 5, the first cohort of 40 regular normal students and 50 junior normal students enrolled at Wenzhou Normal School. On July 25, 1935, Wang Xuesu, the principal of Wenzhou Normal School, resigned due to illness, and the provincial government appointed Xu Fangtian as the principal. On September 5, Wenzhou Normal School held its second anniversary celebration. On October 12, the drama troupe and educational research society of Wenzhou Normal School were established. In April 1939, regulations such as the 'Detailed Implementation Rules for the Tutorial System of Zhejiang Provincial Wenzhou Normal School,' 'Temporary Rules for Student Conduct Assessment,' and 'Interim Measures for Student Rewards and Punishments' were promulgated. In October, the tutorial system was implemented at Wenzhou Normal School, with each class divided into 2 to 3 groups, and teachers serving as tutors. On April 19, 1941, Japanese forces captured Ruian and Yongjia, landing at Shayuan, six li away from Wenzhou Normal School. Teachers and students hastily retreated to Baoxing Temple in Songqiao (five li from the school). The next morning, they retreated further to Taoshan. On April 29, Japanese forces withdrew from Jiashi, and Yongjia, Ruian, and Pingyang were successively recovered. Wenzhou Normal School resumed classes at Zheng Lou. In September, Wenzhou Normal School established a graduate service and further study guidance office, with one full-time staff member. In August 1942, Ruian County Junior Normal School was established, with Huang Zhenji as principal. In the same month, Japanese forces withdrew from the Yongjia area. Feeling unsafe at Zheng Lou, Wenzhou Normal School obtained approval from the Zhejiang Provincial Department of Education to relocate entirely to Jugang, Taishun for classes. On October 11, the Yongjia branch of the Wenzhou Normal School Alumni Association was established.
