About the university
Yanshan University (YSU), located in Qinhuangdao, Hebei Province, is a national key university jointly established by the Hebei Provincial People's Government, the Ministry of Education, the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, and the State Administration of Science, Technology and Industry for National Defense. It is a key university supported by Hebei Province for the construction of national first-class universities and world-class disciplines, one of the first batch of universities in China to implement the "Excellent Engineer Education and Training Plan," a member of the Beijing High-Tech University Alliance, and a construction unit of the Hebei Provincial Excellent Engineer College. The university originated from Harbin Institute of Technology (HIT) and was founded in 1920. In 1958, HIT responded to the national call and relocated its heavy machinery and related programs to Fulaerji District, Qiqihar, an industrial city, establishing the HIT Fulaerji Branch. Initially named the HIT Fulaerji Heavy Machinery Institute, it was later renamed the HIT Heavy Machinery Institute. In 1960, it became an independent institution named Northeast Heavy Machinery Institute, directly under the Ministry of Mechanical Industry. In 1978, it was designated as a national key university. From 1985 to 1997, the university moved southward to Qinhuangdao. In 1997, with the approval of the former State Education Commission, it was renamed Yanshan University. In 1998, it was transferred from the Ministry of Mechanical Industry to Hebei Province, adopting a central-local joint management model with Hebei Province as the primary administrator. In 2000, Hebei Light Industry Management School merged into Yanshan University. As of December 2025, the university covers an area of 4,000 mu (approximately 267 hectares) with a building area of 1.25 million square meters. It has a graduate school and 18 directly affiliated colleges, offering 60 undergraduate programs. It has 12 postdoctoral research stations, 14 first-level doctoral degree programs, 3 professional doctoral degree categories, 30 first-level master's degree programs, and 19 professional master's degree categories. The university has approximately 3,200 faculty and staff members, and over 36,000 students enrolled in regular higher education. In 1920, Harbin Institute of Technology was founded, initially named "Harbin Sino-Russian Industrial School." In 1938, it was renamed "Harbin Institute of Technology." In 1954, the State Council designated six universities as the first batch of national key universities, with HIT being the only one outside Beijing. In 1958, HIT's heavy machinery and related programs moved to Qiqihar, adjacent to China First Heavy Industries, to establish the "HIT Fulaerji Heavy Machinery Institute," later renamed "HIT Heavy Machinery Institute." In 1960, the HIT Heavy Machinery Institute became an independent institution named "Northeast Heavy Machinery Institute," under the First Ministry of Machine Building. The following year, Shenyang Heavy Machinery Institute and Lanzhou Petrochemical Machinery Institute merged into Northeast Heavy Machinery Institute, which began enrolling and training graduate students that same year. In 1978, Northeast Heavy Machinery Institute was designated as a national key university by the State Council. In 1981, it became one of the first universities in China authorized to grant master's degrees. In 1983, it was granted the authority to confer doctoral degrees. In 1984, a branch campus was established in the coastal open city of Qinhuangdao, forming a two-campus structure in the north and south. In 1997, Northeast Heavy Machinery Institute was renamed "Yanshan University." The following year, the university was transferred from the Ministry of Mechanical Industry to Hebei Province, adopting a central-local joint management model with Hebei Province as the primary administrator.
