The history traces back to 1936 when the Private Fujian Union College established two departments: Agriculture and Agricultural Economics. In 1938, the college moved to Shaowu County. In spring 1940, the Agricultural College of Fujian Union University was established in Shaowu. After the victory of the Anti-Japanese War, in November 1945, Fujian Union University moved to Kuiqi Township, Fuzhou. In April 1951, the People's Government took over the Private Fujian Union University and merged it with Hwa Nan College of Arts and Sciences to form Fuzhou University, and the Agricultural College of Fujian Union University was renamed the Agricultural College of Fuzhou University, remaining at the original site. The Fujian Provincial Agricultural College was founded in 1940 with seven departments including Agronomy, Horticulture, and Forestry. Its initial campus was in Yong'an County, and after the war, it moved to Fuzhou, located at the southern foot of Pingshan and the northern end of Zhongshan Road. In October 1949, the Cultural and Education Department of the Fuzhou Military Control Commission took over the college and renamed it Fujian Agricultural College, with the campus on Zhongshan Road. In June 1951, Fujian Agricultural College merged into Xiamen University and was renamed the Agricultural College of Xiamen University, operating in both Xiamen and Fuzhou. In June 1952, the Agricultural College of Xiamen University and the Agricultural College of Fuzhou University merged to form Fujian Agricultural College, located in Kuiqi, Fuzhou. In 1958, the Forestry Department was separated to establish Fujian Forestry College independently. In the same year, a Zhangzhou branch was created. In 1960, the Zhangzhou branch was placed under the leadership of the Longxi Prefectural Committee and renamed Zhangzhou Agricultural College. In 1962, it was dissolved and merged back into Fujian Agricultural College. In 1958, the college moved to Meifeng on the outskirts of Fuzhou. In 1962, it began recruiting graduate students. In 1972, Fujian Agricultural College and Fujian Forestry College merged again to form Fujian Agriculture and Forestry University, with its headquarters at the original site of Fujian Forestry College in Xiqin, Nanping, and branches in Sanming and Shaxian.
