About the university
Fujian Medical University (FMU), also known as Fuyi Da, is located in Fuzhou, Fujian Province. It is a university jointly established by the Fujian Provincial People's Government and the National Health Commission, a member of the Fujian "Double First-Class" initiative, a key provincial university, a pilot institution for the Ministry of Education's "Excellent Doctor Education and Training Program," a host institution for Chinese Government Scholarship international students, and a project university for the National College Student Innovation and Entrepreneurship Training Program. It serves as Fujian Province's center for health talent cultivation, medical science research, and healthcare services. The predecessor of Fujian Medical University was the Fujian Provincial Medical School, founded in 1937. It was renamed Fujian Provincial Medical College in 1939, Fujian Medical College in 1949, and merged with Fujian College of Traditional Chinese Medicine and the Medical Department of Huaqiao University in 1969 to form Fujian Medical University. It was renamed Fujian Medical College in 1982 and reverted to Fujian Medical University in April 1996. In 2003, it was designated as a key provincial university by the Fujian Provincial People's Government and passed the Ministry of Education's undergraduate teaching evaluation with good results. As of April 2025, the university has two campuses, Qishan and Wushan, covering a planned area of about 1,480 mu. It comprises 23 schools (departments) and offers 30 undergraduate programs. It has 9 first-level master's degree authorization disciplines, 10 professional master's degree authorization points, 6 first-level doctoral degree authorization disciplines, 3 professional doctoral degree authorization points, and 4 postdoctoral research stations. There are 1,663 full-time teachers (including clinical faculty) and over 19,000 full-time students. In June 1937 (the 26th year of the Republic of China), the Fujian Provincial Medical School was established in Minhou County, Fujian. In October of the same year, the Fujian Provincial Hospital was designated as its affiliated hospital. In June 1938, due to the War of Resistance against Japan, the school moved to Sha County in northern Fujian. In August of that year, it was officially named Fujian Provincial Medical College, with a six-year program and graduates awarded a Bachelor of Medicine degree. After the victory of the War of Resistance against Japan, the school moved back to Minhou County, Fujian, and rebuilt its campus on the former site of the Minhou County Provincial Hospital and the Senior Vocational School of Industry (Jixiangshan). The medical program lasted six years, while the medical specialization program lasted five years. At that time, there were only 19 full-time basic science teachers and 3 part-time teachers. On the eve of liberation, there were only 15 full-time basic science teachers. The affiliated hospital had 30 beds and 12 clinical teachers, with 294 enrolled students. A total of 279 students graduated before liberation. In November 1949, the Fujian Provincial People's Government took over the Fujian Provincial Medical College and renamed it Fujian Medical College, with a five-year program. In 1951, in addition to the original medical undergraduate program, a three-year medical specialization program was added, along with an intermediate health education teacher training class.
