About the university
Fujian Normal University (FNU), also known as Fujian Normal University, is located in Fuzhou, a historic and cultural city renowned as the "Seaside Zou-Lu" (a land of cultural excellence). It is a full-time public undergraduate university, a key comprehensive university jointly established by the Fujian Provincial People's Government and the Ministry of Education of the People's Republic of China, and a high-level university under key construction in Fujian Province. The university is approved to admit international students under the Chinese Government Scholarship, participates in the National High-Level University Graduate Program, hosts the Ministry of Education's Basic Discipline Top-Notch Student Training Program 2.0 base, the Excellent Teacher Training Program, the national "2011 Collaborative Innovation Center," and the Higher Education Discipline Innovation and Talent Introduction Base. It is also a pilot school for the separate recruitment of Taiwanese students, a base for teaching Chinese to Southeast Asian countries under the Ministry of Education, and a key school for supporting neighboring countries' Chinese language teaching under Hanban. Fujian Normal University traces its origins to the "Fujian Superior Normal School" founded in 1907 by Chen Baochen, a tutor to the Qing emperor. After several mergers and reorganizations involving Hwa Nan College, Fukien Christian University, and Fujian Provincial Normal College, it was established as Fujian Normal College in 1953 and renamed Fujian Normal University in 1972. In 1981, the State Council approved it as one of the first institutions authorized to confer master's degrees, and it gained doctoral degree authorization in 1993. In 2020, it was honored as a "National Civilized Campus." In 2022, it was designated as a Class A university in Fujian Province's second round of "Double First-Class" construction. As of June 2025, the university has two campuses, Qishan and Cangshan, covering an area of over 4,000 mu (approximately 267 hectares). It offers 85 undergraduate programs across 28 schools, with 33 first-level master's degree programs, 27 professional master's degree categories, 19 first-level doctoral degree programs, 4 professional doctoral degree programs, and 20 postdoctoral research stations. The faculty includes 2,160 full-time teachers, and the student body comprises over 25,000 full-time undergraduates and more than 10,000 graduate students. In February 1907, Fujian Superior Normal School was founded with Chen Baochen as its principal. The first classes offered specializations in physics/chemistry and natural history, later adding geography/history, mathematics, and natural history undergraduate programs. In 1917, Hwa Nan College began offering four-year undergraduate programs, with its first batch of undergraduates graduating in 1921. In June 1934, Hwa Nan College received permanent approval from the Ministry of Education of the National Government, and on September 21, it was formally recognized by the Board of Regents of the University of the State of New York as authorized to confer Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Science degrees. During the period in Nanping, faculty and students actively participated in anti-Japanese national salvation efforts, conducting three months of patriotic propaganda in urban and rural areas, training over 300 rural women in first aid, and staging plays, operas, and concerts, with proceeds used to comfort frontline soldiers. Their patriotic actions were highly praised by the military and civilians. In 1941, a fire destroyed the Peng's Building on Hwa Nan College's Fuzhou campus, burning down the library, laboratories, and classrooms.
