About the university
Xidian University, abbreviated as XDU, is a national key university directly under the Ministry of Education, featuring electronic and information disciplines as its core, with a coordinated development of engineering, science, management, humanities, and economics. It is listed among the national "Double First-Class," "Project 211," and "Project 985 Advantage Discipline Innovation Platform" universities. Xidian is one of the first nine universities to establish a National Model Microelectronics College, one of the first nine to set up a National Integrated Circuit Talent Training Base, one of the first two to pilot a National Cybersecurity Talent Training Base, one of the first seven to host a First-Class Cybersecurity College, one of the first 33 to establish a Characteristic Demonstration Software College, one of eight universities with a National Integrated Circuit Industry-Education Integration Innovation Platform, and one of five universities undertaking the construction of a National Cryptographic Science Research Experiment Platform. It also hosts the National Excellence Engineer College, the Ministry of Education Integrated Research Platform, and is among the first batch of demonstration bases for international students studying in China. The university's predecessor was the Central Revolutionary Military Commission Radio School, founded in 1931 in Ruijin, Jiangxi. It was the first engineering and technical school established by the Communist Party of China and its military, personally founded by Mao Zedong and other veteran revolutionaries, inheriting the longest red lineage among Chinese universities. After its founding, the school operated in various locations including Ruijin (Jiangxi), Yan'an (Shaanxi), Huolu (Hebei), and Zhangjiakou (Hebei). In 1958, it relocated to Xi'an, Shaanxi. In 1960, it was renamed the People's Liberation Army Military Telecommunications Engineering College (abbreviated as "Xijundian"). In 1966, it was transferred to local administration, and in 1988, it was officially named Xidian University. As of May 2025, the university has two campuses (South and North), covering a total area of 3,944.8 mu (approximately 263 hectares), with a building area of 1,590,600 square meters. It comprises 28 secondary teaching and research units, 70 undergraduate programs, 19 first-level doctoral degree authorization disciplines, 29 first-level master's degree authorization disciplines, and 15 postdoctoral research stations. The faculty includes over 2,800 full-time teachers, including more than 800 doctoral supervisors and over 1,900 master's supervisors. The total full-time enrollment is 39,440 students, including 22,750 undergraduates, 13,231 master's students, and 3,459 doctoral students. The university's history traces back to the First Front Army Radio Training Class, which opened on February 10, 1931, in Xiaobu, Ningdu, Jiangxi, with Commander-in-Chief Zhu De attending the opening ceremony. In March 1933, the school was renamed the Chinese Workers' and Peasants' Red Army Communication School ("Hongjun Tongxiao") and began mobile schooling. During the Long March, it was reorganized as the Teaching Brigade of the Military Commission, code-named "Red Star Third Brigade." After reaching northern Shaanxi in December 1935, it merged with other training units to form the Central Military Commission Radio Communication School. In January 1937, the school moved with the Party Central Committee to Yan'an, where it was known as "Yan'an Communication School" and began a new period of education during the War of Resistance Against Japan. In November of the same year, the Shanxi-Chahar-Hebei Military Region established a radio training class, which later developed into the Military Region Telecommunications Engineering College. Mao Zedong inscribed three mottos for the school: "You are the clairvoyant ears and eyes of science," "Serve the people wholeheartedly," and "Be hardworking and thrifty."
