About the university

Xi'an Shiyou University (XSYU), also known as 'Xishida' or 'Xi'an Shida', is located in Xi'an, Shaanxi Province. It is a full-time regular institution of higher education established by the state, run by the Shaanxi Provincial People's Government, and jointly built by the central and local governments. It is a university jointly built by the Shaanxi Provincial People's Government and the three major national oil companies, a 'Double First-Class' cultivation university in Shaanxi Province, a high-level university construction institution in Shaanxi Province, a doctoral degree-granting unit, and a postdoctoral research station. The university is among the second batch of universities selected for the Excellent Engineer Education and Training Program. It is also a host institution for Chinese Government Scholarship international students. The university traces its origins to a surveying and drilling training class organized in August 1950. On January 5, 1951, the Northwest Petroleum Cadre School (Lanzhou Petroleum Cadre School) was established. On October 12, 1951, the Northwest Petroleum Industry School was officially founded, merging the Northwest Petroleum Cadre School, Shaanxi Private Lixing Middle School (founded in 1935), and Shaanxi Provincial No. 3 Middle School. In 1951, the Northwest Petroleum Industry College was established as the first specialized school for training petroleum technical cadres. In 1958, it was upgraded to a four-year undergraduate institution and renamed Xi'an Petroleum Institute. In 1969, it was converted into a factory. In 1980, with State Council approval, Xi'an Petroleum Institute resumed operations under the Ministry of Petroleum Industry. In 1990, it was authorized to grant master's degrees. In 2000, it was transferred from China National Petroleum Corporation to joint central-local management with the Shaanxi Provincial People's Government as the main administrator. In 2003, with Ministry of Education approval, it was renamed Xi'an Shiyou University and authorized to jointly train doctoral students. In 2018, it was authorized to grant doctoral degrees. As of May 2025, the university has three campuses: Yanta, Mingde, and Huyi, covering an area of 2,078 mu (approximately 138.5 hectares), with total fixed and intangible assets valued at 3.527 billion RMB. It comprises 18 schools (departments) offering 55 undergraduate programs. It has 1 postdoctoral research station, 3 first-level doctoral degree authorization disciplines, 18 first-level master's degree authorization disciplines, and 15 master's professional degree categories. The university has over 2,000 faculty and staff, including more than 1,350 full-time teachers. It enrolls over 18,000 undergraduate students, more than 5,400 master's and doctoral students, over 1,000 international students from various countries, and over 27,000 continuing education students.
