About the university

Guizhou Minzu University, abbreviated as GZMU, is located in Guiyang, Guizhou Province. It is jointly established by the Guizhou Provincial People's Government and the State Ethnic Affairs Commission, and has been selected for the Emerging Engineering Education Research and Practice Project and the National Base for Inheriting Chinese Excellent Traditional Culture in Regular Higher Education Institutions. The university is rated as excellent in the undergraduate teaching level evaluation by the Ministry of Education, is a host institution for international students under the Chinese Government Scholarship program, and is a key university in Guizhou Province. It receives counterpart support from East China Normal University and South China University of Technology. Founded in 1951 as Guizhou Institute for Nationalities, it was renamed Guizhou Minzu University in 2012 with the approval of the Ministry of Education and the Guizhou Provincial People's Government. As of October 2024, the university covers an area of 2,708 mu (about 180.5 hectares) with a building area of 1.11 million square meters. It offers 65 undergraduate programs, 1 first-level doctoral degree authorization point, 1 special doctoral talent training project for national needs, 11 first-level master's degree authorization points, and 21 professional master's degree authorization points. The university has 1,322 full-time teachers and 22,821 full-time students. As of June 2025, it has 23 schools and colleges. In March 1951, the Guizhou Provincial Party Committee and the Guizhou Provincial People's Government submitted a request to the Southwest Military and Political Committee to establish Guizhou Institute for Nationalities. On March 17, 1951, the Ethnic Affairs Office of the Southwest Military and Political Committee approved the establishment of the Guizhou Branch of Southwest Institute for Nationalities. On May 17, the opening ceremony of Guizhou Institute for Nationalities was held, starting with a political training class for ordinary cadres. In early 1953, the institute moved from Putuo Road in Guiyang to Huaxi, and offered ethnic policy research classes, cadre rotation political classes, and cadre rotation cultural classes, training a total of 2,480 ethnic minority in-service cadres. In 1956, the institute formulated a twelve-year plan and successively established departments of ethnic languages, history, politics, economics, law, and arts. The ethnic research office was expanded to a division-level unit, with the goal of gradually becoming a comprehensive ethnic university. In the autumn of that year, the institute started preparatory high school classes, art middle school classes, and ethnic language classes. The provincial party committee and government decided to transfer the art department (including all teachers and equipment) of Guiyang Normal College to Guizhou Institute for Nationalities, establishing the Department of Arts. In October, the institute launched ethnic language classes, which ran for two sessions. The first session enrolled 194 students, covering Miao and Bouyei languages. In 1959, Guizhou University moved to the campus of the institute, and Guizhou Institute for Nationalities was merged into Guizhou University and subsequently dissolved. According to instructions from higher authorities, all personnel, cultural relics, and materials from the ethnic research office were transferred to the Guizhou Provincial Institute of Ethnic Minorities.
