About the university

Zhengzhou University (ZZU), located in Zhengzhou, Henan Province, is a university jointly established by the Ministry of Education of the People's Republic of China and the People's Government of Henan Province under a "ministry-province cooperation" framework. It is a national "Double First-Class" (first-class university) construction university and a "Project 211" construction university. The university has been successively included in the national programs for cultivating outstanding engineers, outstanding legal talents, and outstanding medical doctors. It has been selected for the national "Plan 111" and the National College Students' Innovation and Entrepreneurship Training Program, among others. It is one of the first national demonstration schools for deepening innovation and entrepreneurship education reform and a national model university for innovation and entrepreneurship. The medical education of Zhengzhou University originated from Henan Zhongshan University in 1928. In 1952, Henan Medical College was established as an independent institution, marking the beginning of higher medical education in Henan. The original Zhengzhou University was founded in 1956 as the first comprehensive university established after the founding of the People's Republic of China, and in 1996 it became a key construction university under the national "Project 211." Zhengzhou University of Technology was established in 1963, originally named Zhengzhou Institute of Technology, and was renamed Zhengzhou University of Technology in 1996. It was a key institution directly under the former Ministry of Chemical Industry. In July 2000, the original Zhengzhou University, Zhengzhou University of Technology, and Henan Medical University merged to form the new Zhengzhou University. In September 2012, the university was selected for the national "Midwest Universities Comprehensive Strength Enhancement Project." In November 2021, it was selected as a base for the Ministry of Education's Top-notch Student Training Program 2.0 in Basic Disciplines. As of March 2025, the university covers a total area of over 8,500 mu, with four campuses: the main campus, south campus, north campus, and east campus. It has 51 schools and departments, 123 undergraduate programs, 36 first-level doctoral degree authorization points, 6 professional doctoral degree authorization points, 60 first-level master's degree authorization points, 41 professional master's degree authorization points, and 31 postdoctoral research stations. The university has over 4,500 full-time teachers (including full-time researchers), over 44,000 full-time undergraduate students, nearly 30,000 graduate students, and over 2,300 international students from 88 countries. Zhengzhou University's medical education began in 1928 when Henan Provincial Zhongshan University (renamed Henan Provincial University in 1930) established a medical department in Kaifeng. In May 1930, the Henan Civil Affairs Department's Midwifery Training Institute (established in 1928) was placed under the jurisdiction of the Medical Department of Henan University and was restructured into the Midwifery School attached to the Medical Department of Henan University. At the same time, the Midwifery Hospital attached to the Medical Department of Henan University (now the Second Affiliated Hospital of Zhengzhou University) was established. In November 1948, the Medical College of Zhongyuan University was established in Kaifeng, located on the original site of the Medical College of Henan University. The faculty and teaching facilities of the Medical College were largely derived from the Medical College of Henan University and the Fourth Column Medical School of the Second Field Army. In 1949, some faculty and students of the Medical College of Zhongyuan University moved south to Nanjing and later established the "Second Field Army Medical University" (one of the predecessors of the current Army Medical University). In May, upon the decision of the Henan Provincial Party Committee and the Henan Provincial People's Government, Henan University was officially restored. The faculty and students of the Medical College of Zhongyuan University who remained in Kaifeng merged with the Henan Military Region Health School to restore the Medical College of Henan University. In 1952, during the nationwide restructuring of higher education institutions, the Medical College was separated from Henan University to become Henan Medical College, renamed "Henan Medical College."
