About the university
Changchun University (CCU), located in Changchun City, Jilin Province, occupies the former site of the "Manchukuo National Construction University" during the Japanese puppet regime and the "College of Agriculture of National Changchun University" during the Kuomintang period. In 1987, the China Disabled Persons' Federation and the Jilin Provincial People's Government established the first higher special education institution in China and Asia at Changchun University. The university's predecessor was the Changchun Industrial Accounting and Statistics School, founded in 1949 by the Ministry of Industry of the former Northeast People's Government, which trained the first batch of industrial accounting and statistics professionals for New China. In tandem with national development and changes of the times, the school changed its name several times. In 1987, with the approval of the former State Education Commission, four institutions—Jilin University of Science and Technology, Jilin Mechanical and Electrical College, Changchun Foreign Languages College, and Changchun Vocational University—merged to form Changchun University. In 2000, the former Jilin Forestry School was merged into the university. As of November 2024, the university has three campuses covering a total area of 1.02 million square meters; it comprises 20 teaching faculties and schools, 49 undergraduate programs, including 2 national-level characteristic specialties and 8 provincial-level characteristic specialties; 3 doctoral degree construction and cultivation disciplines, 9 first-level master's degree authorization points, and 15 professional master's degree authorization points; a total of 20,022 full-time students and 1,279 faculty and staff. The Ministry of Industry of the former Northeast People's Government, based on the strong industrial foundation and rapid recovery and development of production and construction in the Northeast region, decided to establish a higher vocational school to cultivate new-type industrial economic management talents, in order to meet the needs of the booming economic construction in the Northeast and to support the whole country. The site chosen was the former location of the "Manchukuo National Construction University" during the Japanese puppet regime and the "College of Agriculture of National Changchun University" during the Kuomintang period, as the new campus for the newly established industrial accounting and statistics school. At the same time, with the approval of the Ministry of Industry of the Northeast People's Government, the school was named "Changchun Industrial Accounting and Statistics School" and officially operated independently. The Central Ministry of Heavy Industry decided to adjust the Northeast Industrial Accounting and Statistics College from a higher vocational level to a secondary vocational level, and the school name was changed to "Changchun Industrial Planned Economy School". The Central Ministry of Metallurgical Industry decided to transfer the school to the leadership of Jilin Province and suggested changing it to a metallurgical-type school. In August of the same year, the Jilin Provincial Party Committee and Provincial Government, in order to meet the needs of the development of the steel and metallurgical industry, decided to upgrade the school, naming it "Changchun Metallurgical College", under the leadership of the Provincial Metallurgical Industry Bureau. The Jilin Provincial Party Committee and Provincial Government decided to upgrade Changchun Metallurgical College to an undergraduate college. In June of the same year, with approval, the Mining and Metallurgy Department of Jilin University of Technology was transferred to Jilin Mining and Metallurgy College. According to the decision of the Jilin Provincial Party Committee and Provincial Government, the secondary vocational departments of Jilin Mining and Metallurgy College and Jilin Institute of Technology were merged to form "Jilin Industrial School", under the leadership of the Jilin Provincial Heavy Industry Department.
