About the university

Qingdao University (QU) is a full-time regular institution of higher education jointly established by Shandong Province and Qingdao City, located in Qingdao, Shandong Province. It is a comprehensive university integrating natural sciences, humanities, and social sciences. It has been selected as a key construction university for the "Aiming for First-Class" initiative of Shandong Province's high-level universities, a pilot university for the Ministry of Education's Excellent Doctor Education and Training Program, one of the first batch of national intellectual property pilot universities, a demonstration university for the Ministry of Education's innovation and entrepreneurship education reform, one of the first batch of national-level innovation and entrepreneurship college construction units, and a demonstration university for the Ministry of Education's reform of teacher evaluation. It hosts the Ministry of Education's demonstration base for studying in China and a national-level language promotion base. The university's history can be traced back to the Qingdao Special Higher School (later transformed into Qingdao Medical College) founded in 1909, the Qingdao Textile Technology Training Class (later transformed into Shandong Textile Engineering College) established in 1950, the Qingdao Teachers' Evening College (later transformed into Qingdao Normal College) formed in 1951, and the original Qingdao University established in 1985. In 1993, Qingdao University was formed through the merger of the original Qingdao University, Shandong Textile Engineering College, Qingdao Medical College, and Qingdao Normal College. In 1994, Qingdao University was approved as a master's degree-granting institution, and in 1998, it became a doctoral degree-granting institution. As of May 2025, the university has three campuses: Fushan Campus, Jinjialing Campus, and Songshan Campus, covering an area of 2,496 mu (approximately 166.4 hectares) with a building area of 1,119,000 square meters. It has 63,400 sets of teaching and research equipment. It comprises 28 colleges and Qingdao Medical College, with 89 undergraduate programs on record and 78 programs enrolling students in 2024. It offers 20 first-level doctoral degree programs and professional doctoral degree programs, 40 first-level master's degree programs, and 31 types of professional master's degrees. It has 11 postdoctoral research stations, over 3,700 faculty and staff, and more than 41,000 full-time students. The starting point of the university's history should be traced back to the different historical origins of the predecessor institutions before the merger. Among them, Qingdao Medical College has the earliest historical origin, dating back to the Qingdao Special Higher School established in 1909. In 1909, the Qingdao Special Higher School officially opened, offering disciplines such as law and politics, technology, medicine, and agriculture and forestry, making it the first comprehensive university in modern Qingdao. The medical program of the Qingdao Special Higher School was run in conjunction with the Jiaozhou Governor's Hospital (the predecessor of the Affiliated Hospital of Qingdao University), which provided medical faculty, teaching, and clinical internship facilities for the medical education of the school. After the outbreak of World War I, the Qingdao Special Higher School closed in 1914, and the Jiaozhou Governor's Hospital was renamed Qingdao Hospital. Relying on Qingdao Hospital, the Qingdao Medical School was established based on the existing medical education. Over different periods, the school successively used names such as Qingdao Medical University and Qingdao East Asia Medical College, and in 1943, it was named Qingdao Medical School. After the closure of the Qingdao Special Higher School, the then Beiyang government planned to continue establishing a comprehensive university in Qingdao. In 1924, the Private Qingdao University was established. In 1930, the National Qingdao University was established on the basis of acquiring the assets of the Private Qingdao University, offering disciplines such as literature, education, mathematics, physics, chemistry, and biology. In 1932, the National Qingdao University was renamed National Shandong University, with two colleges: the College of Arts and Sciences and the College of Engineering, comprising eight departments. In 1937, with the full outbreak of the War of Resistance Against Japan, National Shandong University moved to Anqing and Wanxian, and temporarily closed in 1938. In 1946, National Shandong University was reestablished in Qingdao, setting up the College of Arts, College of Sciences, College of Engineering, College of Agriculture, and College of Medicine. Its College of Medicine was formed by merging the aforementioned Qingdao Medical School and its affiliated hospital. After the liberation of Qingdao in 1949, National Shandong University was renamed Shandong University. In 1956, the College of Medicine was separated from Shandong University and established as an independent institution, named Qingdao Medical College. In 1958, Shandong University moved to the provincial capital Jinan. In 1978, Qingdao Medical College became one of the first batch of institutions authorized to grant master's degrees. Shandong Textile Engineering College originated from the Qingdao Textile Technology Training Class held by the East China Textile Administration of the Ministry of Textile Industry in April 1950. Subsequently, it went through periods as the Qingdao Textile Management Bureau Cadre School, Qingdao Textile Administration Bureau Cadre School, Qingdao Textile College, Qingdao Textile Industry School, and Shandong Textile Industry School. In 1978, with the approval of the State Council, Shandong Textile Engineering College was established on the basis of Shandong Textile Industry School.
