About the university
China Three Gorges University (CTGU), located in Yichang City, Hubei Province, is a full-time undergraduate institution jointly established by the Hubei Provincial People's Government and the Ministry of Water Resources of the People's Republic of China, and is under the administration of Hubei Province. It is a university under the Ministry of Education's Excellent Engineer Education and Training Program, a "Domestic First-Class University" construction university in Hubei Province, a key high-level provincial university, a national model university for graduate employment, and a national training base for graduate employability. It is qualified to enroll preparatory students for ethnic minorities, international students, Chinese Government Scholarship (CSC) recipients, international students in the undergraduate clinical medicine program (taught in English), and students from Hong Kong and Taiwan without entrance examinations. In 1996, Gezhouba Institute of Hydroelectric Engineering merged with the former Wuhan University of Hydraulic and Electric Engineering to form a new Wuhan University of Hydraulic and Electric Engineering. In the same year, Yichang Medical College, Yichang Normal College, and Yichang Vocational University merged to form Hubei Three Gorges College. On May 25, 2000, with the approval of the Ministry of Education, the former Wuhan University of Hydraulic and Electric Engineering (Yichang) and the former Hubei Three Gorges College merged to establish China Three Gorges University. In 2012, the university became one of the first batch of 66 pilot undergraduate institutions nationwide; the following year, it became a doctoral degree-granting institution; and in 2018, it became a "Domestic First-Class University" construction university. As of October 2024, the university covers an area of over 3,000 mu, with a total building area of 1.4 million square meters. It has 54,400+ sets of teaching and research equipment, with a total value of 1.007 billion yuan. It comprises 22 colleges, offering 55 undergraduate programs, 4 first-level doctoral degree authorization disciplines, 2 professional doctoral degree authorization points, 4 postdoctoral research stations, 27 first-level master's degree authorization disciplines, and 22 professional master's degree categories. The university has 1,614 full-time faculty members, 25,875 full-time undergraduate students, and 8,418 doctoral and master's students. The history of China Three Gorges University can be traced back to 1923, when the China Medical Missionary Association founded the Medical Technicians School (Bo Yi Ji Zhuan) in Anqing, Anhui. In 1928, the school moved from Anqing to Hankou and continued to operate through wars until the founding of the People's Republic of China. In 1952, the Medical Technicians School merged with the Central South Health Personnel Training Institute to form the Central South Health College, which was renamed Hubei Provincial Health Cadre Training School in 1956. In 1958, the Hubei Provincial Health Cadre Training School merged with Hubei Provincial Medical College to form Wuchang Medical College, which moved to Yichang in 1960 and merged with Yichang Medical College to form a new Yichang Medical College. In 1993, the school was named Yichang Medical College. In 1946, Yidu Normal School was established; in 1950, it moved to Yichang and was renamed Hubei Provincial Yichang Normal School; in 1978, it was renamed Yichang Normal College; and in 1993, it was named Yichang Normal College. In 1978, Yichang Higher Industrial Class (Gao Gong Ban) was established; in 1983, based on this class, Yichang Vocational University was founded; and in 1986, it was renamed Yichang University. In 1995, Yichang Medical College, Yichang Normal College, and Yichang University merged to form Hubei Three Gorges College, which was officially established in 1996. On April 1, 1978, the State Council approved the establishment of Gezhouba Institute of Hydroelectric Engineering, the only undergraduate institution in the country named after an engineering project at that time. The institute was successively under the administration of the Ministry of Water Resources and Electric Power, the Ministry of Energy, and the Ministry of Electric Power Industry. In 1996, Gezhouba Institute of Hydroelectric Engineering merged with Wuhan University of Hydraulic and Electric Engineering to form the new Wuhan University of Hydraulic and Electric Engineering (Yichang), with campuses in Wuhan and Yichang, and entered the "211 Project" construction ranks that same year.
