About the university
China University of Mining and Technology (CUMT), located in Xuzhou, Jiangsu Province, is a national key university jointly established by the Ministry of Education of the People's Republic of China, the Ministry of Emergency Management of the People's Republic of China, and the People's Government of Jiangsu Province. It is directly under the Ministry of Education of the People's Republic of China and is a member of the national "211 Project" key universities, the "985 Advantage Discipline Innovation Platform" project, the "Double First-Class" discipline construction universities, and a pilot university for the "Excellent Engineer Education and Training Program." The university traces its origins to the Jiaozuo Road and Mine School founded in Henan in 1909. In 1938, it merged with the Engineering College of Northeastern University, the Engineering College of Peking University, and the Engineering College of Beiyang University to form the National Northwestern Institute of Technology. In 1946, the Jiaozuo Engineering Institute was reestablished. In March 1950, it was renamed China Institute of Mining and Technology. In 1953, it moved to Beijing and was renamed Beijing Institute of Mining and Technology. In 1970, it moved to Hechuan County, Sichuan Province, and was renamed Sichuan Institute of Mining and Technology. In 1978, it relocated to Xuzhou, Jiangsu, and restored the name China Institute of Mining and Technology. In 1988, it was renamed China University of Mining and Technology. In 2000, the university was placed under the direct administration of the Ministry of Education. In 2004, it became one of the 56 universities approved by the state to establish a graduate school. As of November 2025, the university has two campuses, Wenchang and Nanhu, covering an area of over 4,200 mu (approximately 280 hectares), with a building area of 1.56 million square meters. It holds a collection of over 20 million books and documents. The university has 18 postdoctoral research stations, 21 first-level doctoral degree authorization points, 5 professional doctoral degree authorization categories, 36 first-level master's degree authorization points, and 20 professional master's degree authorization categories. It comprises 24 schools and offers 74 undergraduate programs. The university has over 3,570 faculty and staff members, more than 23,900 full-time undergraduate students, over 14,700 doctoral and master's degree students, over 850 international students, and over 6,600 continuing education students. In June 1898, the British Peking Syndicate Ltd. signed the "Henan Mining Regulations" with the Henan Yufeng Company. According to this agreement, the Peking Syndicate obtained mineral resources and also stipulated that it must establish a mining school near the mine upon starting operations. In March 1909, after years of repeated negotiations by Henan gentry, the British Peking Syndicate, which had seized railway and mining rights in inland China, invested in the establishment of the Jiaozuo Road and Mine School in Henan, which is the predecessor of China University of Mining and Technology. In December 1913, the Peking Syndicate, frustrated by setbacks in expanding iron ore mining and failing to extend its mining boundaries, ceased funding for the school, leading to the closure of the Jiaozuo Road and Mine School. On June 1, 1915, the Fuzhong General Company was established. The Zhongyuan Company and the Peking Syndicate jointly bore the educational expenses, so the Jiaozuo Road and Mine School was renamed Fuzhong Mining School. As the original school site was borrowed by the newly established Fuzhong General Company, the school was temporarily located on Datingmen Street in Kaifeng city. In April 1920, the Fuzhong Mining Specialized School moved back from Kaifeng to the original site of the Jiaozuo Road and Mine School and began classes on May 10.
