About the university
Yunnan Agricultural University (YAU), abbreviated as Yunnongda, is located in Kunming, the Spring City of Yunnan Province. It is a key university under the provincial government of Yunnan, jointly built by the province and the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs. It has been selected into the National Excellent Agricultural and Forestry Talent Education and Training Program and the Excellent Engineer Education and Training Program. It is one of the second batch of national demonstration universities for deepening innovation and entrepreneurship education reform, a national typical experience university for innovation and entrepreneurship, a construction unit of the National '2011 Plan', a host institution for Chinese Government Scholarship international students, and a university with the qualification to recommend graduate students for exemption. It has the authority to confer doctoral and master's degrees and hosts the China-ASEAN Education and Training Center. The history of Yunnan Agricultural University can be traced back to the Yunnan Agricultural School founded in 1907. In 1938, the Agricultural College of National Yunnan University was established in Chenggong County, Kunming. In 1958, it was independently established as Kunming Agricultural and Forestry College and relocated to Heilongtan in the northern suburbs of Kunming. In 1962, the Southern Yunnan University and Western Yunnan University were merged into Kunming Agricultural and Forestry College. In 1969, it moved to Binchuan County, Dali Prefecture, and in 1970 to Xundian County, Qujing Prefecture. In 1971, it merged with Yunnan Agricultural Labor University to form Yunnan Agricultural University, and in 1980, it moved back to Heilongtan in the northern suburbs of Kunming. In 2004, Yunnan Provincial Construction Engineering School and Yunnan Spice Research and Development Center were merged into Yunnan Agricultural University. In 2014, Yunnan Tropical Crops Vocational College was merged into Yunnan Agricultural University. As of June 2025, the university has four campuses, covering an area of 3,821 mu (about 254.7 hectares), with a building area of 732,600 square meters. The total value of teaching and scientific research equipment is 450 million yuan. It has 22 colleges and 73 undergraduate programs. It has 6 postdoctoral research stations for first-level disciplines, 6 first-level doctoral degree authorization points, 24 second-level doctoral degree authorization points, 14 first-level master's degree authorization points, 76 second-level master's degree authorization points, and 12 professional master's degree categories. There are 1,899 faculty and staff members and over 33,000 full-time students. In 1934, the provincial Donglu University was restructured into provincial Yunnan University, and the agricultural experimental field was established to lay the foundation for the agricultural college. In 1938, the Agricultural College of National Yunnan University was founded in Chenggong County, Kunming, with two departments: Agronomy and Forestry, and the first dean was Tang Huiru. In 1940, a sericulture specialty was added. Due to Japanese bombing of Kunming, the college was evacuated to rural Chenggong for operation. In 1953, during the nationwide adjustment of university departments, the departments of Animal Husbandry, Horticulture, and Sericulture of the Agricultural College were transferred to the Agricultural College of Sichuan University (now Sichuan University) and the Southwest Agricultural College (now Southwest University). Subsequently, the Agricultural College was dissolved, and the departments of Agronomy and Forestry were renamed as the Department of Agronomy and the Department of Forestry, directly under Yunnan University. In April 1958, with the approval of the Yunnan Provincial Party Committee, the departments of Agriculture and Forestry of Yunnan University were independently established as Kunming Agricultural and Forestry College, relocated to the former site of the Honorary Soldiers' Sanatorium in Heilongtan, northern suburbs of Kunming. At the same time, three-year and half-year agricultural cadre training classes were held, and the college was directly under the management of the Ministry of Forestry.
