About the university

Shanghai University of Engineering Science (SUES), abbreviated as "SUES", is a full-time regular institution of higher education sponsored by the Shanghai Municipal People's Government. The Shanghai Municipal People's Government fulfills its investment and guarantee obligations in accordance with the law, and the Shanghai Municipal Education Administrative Department is responsible for the management and assessment of the university in accordance with the law. It is one of the first pilot universities of the Ministry of Education's "Excellent Engineer Education and Training Program", the leading unit of the national "New Engineering" construction for local universities, a pilot construction unit of Shanghai's "High-Level Local Application-Oriented Universities", and a construction university of the Data China "Hundred Schools Project". It has been selected for the Ministry of Education's first batch of New Engineering Research and Practice Projects, New Liberal Arts Research and Reform Practice Projects, the National University Student Science and Technology Entrepreneurship Practice Base, and the Shanghai Entrepreneurship Incubation Demonstration Base. It is a council member of the Large Aircraft Industry-Education Integration Alliance, a member of the CDIO Engineering Education Alliance, and a founding member of the Yangtze River Delta High-Level Characteristic Local University Innovation Alliance. The university's predecessor was the Shanghai Jiao Tong University Mechanical and Electrical Branch, the East China Institute of Chemical Technology (now East China University of Science and Technology) Branch (incorporated into the Shanghai Jiao Tong University Mechanical and Electrical Branch in 1984), and the East China Textile Institute (now Donghua University) Branch, all established in 1978. In 1985, with the approval of the Ministry of Education, Shanghai University of Engineering Science was officially established on the basis of the Shanghai Jiao Tong University Mechanical and Electrical Branch and the East China Textile Institute Branch. In 2003, with the approval of the Shanghai Municipal People's Government, the Shanghai Senior Technical School (established in 1951) was fully integrated into Shanghai University of Engineering Science. As of November 2025, the university has campuses in Songjiang, Changning, and Hongkou, covering an area of 1,500 mu, with a total building area of 725,100 square meters, total fixed assets of approximately 3.583 billion yuan, and teaching and research equipment worth approximately 1.395 billion yuan. It has 19 teaching units, offers 64 undergraduate programs, has 1 first-level doctoral degree authorization point, 15 first-level master's degree programs, and 12 professional master's degree programs. It has approximately 25,400 full-time students and over 2,000 faculty and staff. In October 1978, with the approval of the Shanghai Municipal Committee of the Communist Party of China, Shanghai Jiao Tong University, the First Shanghai Bureau of Mechanical and Electrical Industry, the Second Shanghai Bureau of Mechanical and Electrical Industry, the Shanghai Shipbuilding Industry Bureau, the East China Electric Power Administration, the Shanghai Transportation Bureau, and the Changning District People's Government jointly established the Shanghai Jiao Tong University Mechanical and Electrical Branch; the East China Textile Institute, the Shanghai Textile Industry Bureau, the Shanghai Petrochemical Complex, and the Putuo District People's Government jointly established the East China Textile Institute Branch. In 1984, the Shanghai Municipal People's Government decided to merge the East China Institute of Chemical Technology Branch into the Shanghai Jiao Tong University Mechanical and Electrical Branch. In 1985, with the approval of the Ministry of Education, Shanghai University of Engineering Science was officially established on the basis of the Shanghai Jiao Tong University Mechanical and Electrical Branch and the East China Textile Institute Branch. Comrade Fang Yi, then Director of the State Science and Technology Commission, inscribed the university's name. In the same year, the university introduced a cooperative education model from the University of Waterloo in Canada, becoming the first higher education institution in China to pilot industry-university cooperative education. On July 5, 1986, Comrade Jiang Zemin, then Mayor of Shanghai, attended the inaugural ceremony of Shanghai University of Engineering Science, delivered an important speech, and wrote an inscription for the university: "Cultivate more engineering and management talents for Shanghai's economic construction." In October 2002, the Municipal Committee and the Municipal Government decided to build a new campus for the university in the Songjiang University Town area. Subsequently, the university began preparations for the new Songjiang campus. In January 2003, with the decision of the Shanghai Municipal People's Government, the Shanghai Senior Technical School was incorporated into Shanghai University of Engineering Science. On the basis of the Shanghai Senior Technical School, the university established the Higher Vocational and Technical College of Shanghai University of Engineering Science and the Shanghai Senior Technician College. In the same year, Shanghai University of Engineering Science and Dongseo University in South Korea jointly established the "China-Korea Multimedia Design College," the first Sino-foreign cooperative digital media art program approved in China.
