About the university

Nanjing Agricultural University (abbreviated as NJAU or NAU), located in Nanjing, Jiangsu Province, is a national key university under the Ministry of Education. It is distinguished by its strengths and specializations in agriculture and life sciences, with a coordinated development of multiple disciplines including agriculture, science, economics, management, engineering, humanities, and law. The university is a key institution of the national "211 Project," a participant in the "985 Advantage Discipline Innovation Platform," and a "Double First-Class" construction university. Its origins can be traced back to the Agriculture and Natural History Section of Sanjiang Normal School in 1902 and the Agriculture Program of Jinling University in 1914. In 1952, following the nationwide restructuring of higher education institutions, Nanjing Agricultural College was established by merging the College of Agriculture of Jinling University, the College of Agriculture of Nanjing University (formerly the College of Agriculture of National Central University), and some departments from the College of Agriculture of Zhejiang University. In 1963, it was designated as one of the two key agricultural universities in China. In November 1971, the college moved to Yangzhou and merged with Subei Agricultural College to form Jiangsu Agricultural College. In January 1979, Nanjing Agricultural College was reestablished and relocated back to Nanjing, while Jiangsu Agricultural College continued operations in Yangzhou. In 1984, it was renamed Nanjing Agricultural University. In 2000, the university was transferred from the Ministry of Agriculture to the direct administration of the Ministry of Education. As of September 2025, the university comprises the Weigang Campus, Binjiang Campus, Pukou Campus, Baima Teaching and Research Base, and Chuzhou Science and Education Innovation Park, covering a total area of over 9,000 mu (approximately 600 hectares) with a building area of 740,000 square meters. It has 20 colleges (departments), 76 undergraduate programs, 30 first-level master's degree authorization points, 17 first-level doctoral degree authorization points, 21 professional master's degree programs, 4 professional doctoral degree programs, and 17 postdoctoral research stations. The university enrolls over 19,000 full-time undergraduates, more than 13,500 graduate students, and employs over 2,900 faculty and staff. The predecessor of the College of Agriculture of Nanjing University can be traced back to the Agriculture and Natural History Section established by Zhang Zhidong at Sanjiang Normal School in 1902. In 1906, it was renamed the Agriculture and Natural History Section of Liangjiang Superior Normal School, but was suspended due to war after the Xinhai Revolution. In 1917, the National Nanjing Higher Normal School added an agricultural specialization. In December 1920, National Southeast University was founded on the basis of the National Nanjing Higher Normal School, and in 1921 it formally established an agricultural department. In 1922, the agricultural specialization of the National Nanjing Higher Normal School was merged into the agricultural department of National Southeast University. In June 1927, National Southeast University and nine other public schools at the junior college level and above in Jiangsu Province, including the First Jiangsu Provincial Agricultural School, merged to form the National Fourth Sun Yat-sen University, with the agricultural department becoming the College of Agriculture, based at the former site of the First Jiangsu Provincial Agricultural School. In February, April, and May 1928, the college was successively renamed the College of Agriculture of National Jiangsu University, the College of Agriculture of Jiangsu University, and the College of Agriculture of National Central University. In September 1937, the main body of the college moved westward with National Central University to Chongqing, where simple school buildings were constructed at Songlinpo in Shapingba, and later a new campus was built in Baixi for first-year students; the Department of Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Medicine moved to the Sichuan Provincial Livestock Conservation Institute at Huaxiba in Chengdu. In November 1946, the college returned to Nanjing with National Central University. In August 1949, it was renamed the College of Agriculture of National Nanjing University, and in October 1950, it became the College of Agriculture of Nanjing University. In 1914, Jinling University established an agricultural program. In 1915, it established a forestry program. The following year, the two programs were merged to form the Department of Agriculture and Forestry of Jinling University. In 1928, Jinling University was officially registered as "Private Jinling University." In 1930, the Department of Agriculture and Forestry was upgraded to the College of Agriculture. After the outbreak of the July 7 Incident in 1937, the college moved to Sichuan with Private Jinling University. In 1946, it returned to Nanjing. In 1951, as Private Jinling University merged with Private Ginling College to form the public Jinling University, the college was renamed the College of Agriculture of Jinling University, located in the original building of the Private Jinling University College of Agriculture. In 1952, during the national restructuring of higher education, Nanjing Agricultural College was established with the College of Agriculture of Jinling University and the College of Agriculture of Nanjing University as the main bodies, along with some departments from the College of Agriculture of Zhejiang University. The college was temporarily located at Dingjiaqiao and moved to a new site at Weigang in the eastern suburbs of Nanjing in 1958. In 1958, the Department of Agricultural Mechanization of Nanjing Agricultural College merged with the Nanjing Agricultural Mechanization School of Jiangsu Province to form the Agricultural Mechanization Branch of Nanjing Agricultural College (Nanjing Agricultural Mechanization School), located at Dianjiangtai in Puzhen. In September 1970, the branch moved to Zhenjiang and was incorporated into Zhenjiang Agricultural Machinery College (now Jiangsu University), and the Nanjing Agricultural Mechanization School was dissolved.
