About the university

Jilin University (JLU), commonly referred to as Jida, is a national key comprehensive university located in Changchun, Jilin Province. It is directly under the administration of the Ministry of Education of the People's Republic of China and is a central direct university. As a member of the prestigious Project 211, Project 985, and the first batch of national Double First-Class A universities, it has also been selected for programs such as the Everest Plan, the Strong Foundation Plan, the 2011 Plan, the 111 Plan, and the Outstanding Legal Talent Education and Training Program, the Outstanding Engineer Education and Training Program, the Outstanding Doctor Education and Training Program, and the Outstanding Agriculture and Forestry Talent Education and Training Program. It is a member of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization University, the 21st Century Academic Alliance, and the Medical Double First-Class Construction Alliance. The university's history can be traced back to the Northeast Administrative College, founded in October 1946, which was later renamed Northeast People's University. In August 1958, it was placed under the leadership of Jilin Province and renamed Jilin University. In 1960, it became a national key comprehensive university. On June 5, 2000, the former Jilin University, Jilin University of Technology, Norman Bethune University of Medical Sciences, Changchun University of Science and Technology, and Changchun Institute of Posts and Telecommunications merged to form the new Jilin University, which became a university directly under the Ministry of Education. On August 29, 2004, the Quartermaster University of the People's Liberation Army was transferred and merged into Jilin University. As of February 2026, the university has six campuses: Qianwei, Nanling, Xinmin, Chaoyang, Nanhu, and Heping, covering an area of 7,345,800 square meters with a building area of 2,926,100 square meters. Its library holds 8,654,700 volumes of books and periodicals. It has 48 teaching units, 4 affiliated hospitals, and 9 affiliated schools. In September 1946, the Northeast Administrative Committee took over Harbin University, converting it from a private to a public university, making it a relatively formal institution of higher education under the leadership of the Communist Party of China. On October 5, 1946, after the victory of the Anti-Japanese War, the Communist Party of China established the Northeast Administrative College in Harbin, the capital of the Northeast Liberated Area, to train revolutionary cadres and professional talents needed to build and consolidate the Northeast revolutionary base and to welcome the birth of New China. In May 1948, the Northeast Administrative College merged with Harbin University to form the Northeast Academy of Sciences. In November, the Northeast Academy of Sciences moved south to Shenyang and was renamed the Northeast Administrative College. In August 1950, the Northeast Administrative College was renamed Northeast People's University, becoming a formal university specializing in training talents in finance, economics, politics, and law. In September, the university moved to Changchun. In 1952, during the nationwide adjustment of higher education institutions, the state transferred a number of renowned scholars from Peking University, Tsinghua University, Yenching University, and other institutions to strengthen the faculty and enhance the university's strength, making Northeast People's University the first comprehensive university founded by the Communist Party of China after the founding of New China.
